I would go with the 0 pb guy, but don't have an analysis to back it up.

I treat the catcher field ratings the same as 3b and CF as these positions each have 3x chances per 216.

With the catcher, I pay closer attention to the T rating if my division possesses more base stealing threats. The PB rating is important but I've seen low PB rated catchers struggled (check prior team fielding stats)

Semper is correct about paying attention to base stealing threats in your division.

I disagree with treating CF errors the same as C and 3B. Those CF errors are going to be a lot of the 2 and 3 base kind.

The thing about catcher E ratings is that catcher E's generally means an added baserunner, whereas both PB and T ratings will only result in runner advancement. As a rule, an extra baserunner is more damaging than a runner taking an extra base.

On the other hand, both of this C's have low E ratings. There's not much difference between e2 and e4 over the course of a season. So, all other things being equal, I would rather save 12 pb than 2 e's.

I disagree with this. To me most of the catcher errors (not associated with a stolen base throwing error) are dropped foul balls which is not an extra base runner and does not even advance the runners. It gives the batter another chance to hit is all.

I think other than CF and Shortstop, the defensive rating of your catcher is the single most important defensive player you can have. With the advanced running rules the defensive rating comes into play on bunts, throws to the plate (ability to block the plate) and ability to keep runners where they are. And a throwing error or a passed ball are more costly than putting a runner on 1st base. Typically you end up with a runner on third and less than 2 outs giving that runner a very high opportunity to score and eliminating any chance for a double play. Plus my following of HAL shows that stolen base attempts are more prevalent in late game situations meaning these plays tend to lose games for you. It is a hidden defensive tax in the system.

Despite that I have used Piazza or Milt May on occasion and other poor defensive catchers, just need to insure the offense you are getting in total with the remainder of the team is compensating for the lost defense. Typically I arrive at the conclusion that 'ol Biz or Johnny Bench 1975 are better than any other options available.

What do you guys think of Roger Bresnahan (1903) as a catcher? Is he worth $7.13m? He is catching and batting 2nd for me in Penmar Park (a lefty homerun stadium). I like his c-1(-2), but wasn't paying much attention to his e13,T-15(pb-14).

he is 27/12 in SB/CS and he has 26 passed balls and 6 throwing errors.

i can say with a fair amount of certainty that i will not use him as a C again, too many PB's. this was a theme league so that's why i have him.
