Re: New Reverse lineup feature

My intention was to insult the idea presented. The “emperor” was meant to represent scumby’s suggestion. While a couple of people commented on his post, nobody said the idea was bad, which made me think of the old emperor fable. I have nothing personal against scumby.

The idea is bad for the following reasons:

1. Major league switch hitters don’t situationally switch hit; they bat right against left-handers and left against right-handers. Period.

2. If they did, you would actually need four columns for a switch hitter’s card: bat right against left, bat right against right, bat left against right, and bat left against left. Why? Because batting left against left is not the same as batting left against a “reverse” righty. Of course, there is absolutely no data to create the two new sides.

3. If a switch hitter has an unbalanced card, a manager would simply to choose the better half regardless of who is pitching.

There have been cases of switch hitters who stop switch hitting. However, it has generally been done between seasons and not simply based on who is pitching. (Before someone can mention someone who changed during the season--there was talk of Dexter Fowler doing so at one low point in his career--the point is the change wasn’t made based on who was pitching.)

Now if the person who first responded to my post (he would want me to mention his name) wanted to attack my opinion as bad, or even better, to give a good reason why scumby’s idea was actually a good one, I would have been interested in hearing his opinion. Sadly, instead, it was a juvenile personal attack on me.

So to Scumby, I did not mean to personally attack you. Your idea, however, I wanted to thoroughly trash! As I said before, I think it is unrealistic and game-breaking. If you are playing the board game or CD-ROM version of the game, you are not allowed to do this and for good reason. I would, however, like to hear more about your comment "Back in my day a switch hitter might change his side of the plate based on the pitcher." Was this done at the major league level? I've been around a while, and I don't remember this.

There are examples of swith hiters going to their Opposite side against knuckelballers in some instances...being a Mets fan I've seen it against Dickey from time to time... but i would not be in favors of allowing that in Strat.

and man did my original thread/post get derailed

My comment was to reflect the flaw in this reverse lineup feature. Reversing switch hitter is not a rare occurence. my pointis the ability to flip as Switch hitter is far more realistic and valauble than a reverse lineup

However, the Rays sent up switch-hitters Ben Zobrist and Dioner Navarro to bat right handed against Marcum, and even more telling was that they not only used right-handed catcher Kelly Shoppach as the DH, but they hit him clean-up. (ironically, Marcum is a 5R in 2011)

NEW YORK -- Angel Pagan, Luis Castillo and Jose Reyes, switch-hitters all, were the Mets' first three batters in the second game of their doubleheader Tuesday night. Each faced Dodgers starter Charlie Haeger who is right-handed. He also throws a knuckleball. So each of the New York trio batted right-handed.

Switch-hitters rarely switched to same "side" as a knuckleball pitchers until Red Schoendienst and Mickey Mantle did so on the 50's and 60's. But now switching is more prevalent, even though there are fewer knuckleball pitchers.

The Mets scored three times against Haeger in the first, incidentally

You only make my point for me, problem is, there's no way to limit it to only knuckball pitchers, which is genreally when it happens, and without that limit i see what you are suggesting being severly abused. Now I'm one of the biggest proponents of using all the cards and feel there should be no seperate Unleashed set, you this may seem like a double standard.. all I can say to that is, I guess even I have my limits on how unrealistcally I want the cards used.

That said, this thread still off the rails

All -

After a few days of this "new toy", I see that I have used the "Reverse Lineups" three times, for the express purpose of tailoring lineups to a starting pitcher...which is far different from setting generic reverse lineups and leaving them active. (Of course, when I later wanted to deactivate the Reverse Lineup, I had to manually reset each lineup button, one-at-a-time.)

With the extra lineups, it is now more likely now that an owner, depending upon the sequence of opposing SPs coming up, can set different lineups for each game of a set. An interesting follow-up point, though, is that the Team Strategy is less flexible than the lineups. Team Strategy is "one choice for the 3-game series". Any of us can see that the best choice on the "Base Stealing" strategy button could differ, game-to-game (and thus from one lineup to the Reverse Lineup for the next game...). Maybe the "Team Strategy" choices (or at least the Base Stealing Strategy button) should be on each Lineup Edit page, along with a single-button to "Use this Strategy for All Lineups" just above the "Save" button.

Now we're back on topic, albeit drawing even more managerial strategies and opportunities (and programming decisions) into question.

Gene!

A lot of interesting discussion about this topic. Bottom line though, it's another option we didn't have before. Always grateful for anything that allows us a little more control over our teams. I still propose the 1 game per night option so we would have much better control over our teams.

*I for one wish they would scrap all these types of projects and get our historical records and manager ratings implemented.....yesterday!
