My intention was to insult the idea presented. The “emperor” was meant to represent scumby’s suggestion. While a couple of people commented on his post, nobody said the idea was bad, which made me think of the old emperor fable. I have nothing personal against scumby.
The idea is bad for the following reasons:
1. Major league switch hitters don’t situationally switch hit; they bat right against left-handers and left against right-handers. Period.
2. If they did, you would actually need four columns for a switch hitter’s card: bat right against left, bat right against right, bat left against right, and bat left against left. Why? Because batting left against left is not the same as batting left against a “reverse” righty. Of course, there is absolutely no data to create the two new sides.
3. If a switch hitter has an unbalanced card, a manager would simply to choose the better half regardless of who is pitching.
There have been cases of switch hitters who stop switch hitting. However, it has generally been done between seasons and not simply based on who is pitching. (Before someone can mention someone who changed during the season--there was talk of Dexter Fowler doing so at one low point in his career--the point is the change wasn’t made based on who was pitching.)
Now if the person who first responded to my post (he would want me to mention his name) wanted to attack my opinion as bad, or even better, to give a good reason why scumby’s idea was actually a good one, I would have been interested in hearing his opinion. Sadly, instead, it was a juvenile personal attack on me.
So to Scumby, I did not mean to personally attack you. Your idea, however, I wanted to thoroughly trash! As I said before, I think it is unrealistic and game-breaking. If you are playing the board game or CD-ROM version of the game, you are not allowed to do this and for good reason. I would, however, like to hear more about your comment "Back in my day a switch hitter might change his side of the plate based on the pitcher." Was this done at the major league level? I've been around a while, and I don't remember this.
