The Posey Mauer experiment - ever try this one?

PostWed Jan 02, 2013 12:34 pm

Buster Posey and Joe Mauer both have very good 2011 cards for the price. (In addition, Mauer has good hair, thanks to Head and Shoulders shampoo.) The problem with their cards is that their values are depreciated due to each having an injury roll on a seven. According to previous work by Dean (I don't have the thread link), an injury roll on a seven will cause a player to miss approximately 11+10+9+8+7+6=51 games. That's about one third of the 162-game season spent in rehab and the training room.

To get more games from these players, I drafted BOTH of them and no other catchers, relying on the fact that HAL will not let the last available catcher be injured. My theory is that they will now miss only about 35 games each.

Here is my team: Bama LamaDingDongs

Against lefties
C=Posey (backup=Mauer)
1B=Viciedo (backup=Posey)

Against righties
C=Mauer (backup=Posey)
1B=Posey (backup=Morneau)

I must admit I think this plan is pretty clever, getting the most out of three real-life MVPs. Through 48 games, they've had relatively few injuries. Unfortunately my team has also had relatively few wins. Do you think this experiment will end up helping my team succeed? I am losing faith and would welcome thoughts.

You're late to the show again Glen. :D j/k

Never tried Mauer & Posey, but I have gone with Hundley & Posey a few times.

Same concept as both have nice cards. Only they hit fairly evenly BOTH ways, whereas Mauer is not good vs. LH's.

It works out very well. Only problem is HAL in his infinite wisdom, does not replace the injured catcher in the middle of a game with the other catcher. So expect a weird combination. ie. I had Hundley get hurt in the middle of a game, and HAL put Mike Aviles in to catch. :o

The next game, Posey came in.

It costs more than Mauer/Posey and you lose the lefty bat, but it works well...

Good feedback. I did not notice Hundley's card previously. (Is he a descendent of Randy and Todd Hundley?)

I was thinking too about Napoli and one of these injury-prone teammates.

I'm not a fan of payrolls greater than $80M. I suppose SOM created "reverse lineups" for those who like those leagues. You wind up with these non-realistic super platooning strategies.

I've gone with Maur/Soto platoon in $80M leagues...can't complain. I think I did the Mauer/Posey combo once too, but only cause Soto was taken. I like Soto vs lefty's, even though he's a t-13 which can hurt.

I just won a championship with Mauer/Hundley.

I got about 120 games out of each.

Just began a league where I fell about $1 short and the fact that I'd have to sacrifce a leadoff hitter of using a Doumit/Posey combo in Rangers Stadium. Just couldn't bring myself to make the necessary cut of any player I had that would have allowed me to do it. Though Doumit is a 2L, he Diamond Dopes well in that ballpark from both sides.

I'll be using the inj 6 experiment a few times in the upcoming season. Rather have consistant production out of the catching position than carrying some slug at .50 for the 25 to 30 games the average catcher will miss in a season.

Glen,

Nick is not related to Randy (father) and Todd (son) Hundley.
