new team, what do you think?

PostThu Jan 24, 2013 11:53 pm

over 75% small ball parks, a shea '71 and 2 polo '41's in my league. all the stadiums in my division are small ball parks.

i like the look of my team as a whole, but any opinions or suggestions are welcome? i know that thomas in RF is not ideal, but i do not think it will kill the team.

For one thought, I'd spend a substantially less on SPs and I'd top grade your RPs. In my experience, the R5/R4 RPs are overkill in the small ball parks. You can get 3 or 4 IPs out of the R2s.

With your fielding range, your X-out outcomes will skew to extra runners per inning. Maury Wills isn't my top choice at your price. Further with the number of large parks, I trust your opponents have spent money on -1+ armed catchers.

Your run ratings aren't bad. Base running is a misunderstood factor until SOM added the stats to track it.

Top grade your catcher so owners won't up their base stealing settings to run on you.

oddly enough all the teams in my league are going with all hit (for small ball) no arm 2e arms on average. and most of them are fielding not great arms in the outfield either. i think they have all collected that one bad arm you can accept in the outfield together on the teams in my division. i actually like my pitching quite a bit.

that martinez card might be one of the best bargains in the set, and hall has been lights out for me recently on a few of my other teams and i am riding it as long as possible. kaat is always a bargain and i am facing a lot of LH hitters in this league. i think that i can get buy with wiltse and hendrix as my 4 and 5 as long as i have a strong RP core. which i do with radatz as my super reliever and glaze as my fill in.

as a bonus every player except my 1 and 2 hitters have positive clutch.

overall, i am feeling pretty good about my team.

With everyone investing in hitting versus fielding factors, even more reason to topgrade your 2b,SS, and CF to 1E## ranged players. Just my two cents.

"Clutch" is important but less so than fielding. On average, you'll get 30 clutch hitting chances per season. On several teams, I've encountered less than 25 chances per season. On the other hand, you'll have 900+ X-out chances. I'd grab a better glove over a clutch hitting weak fielder especially at 2b, SS, and CF.

As for the catchers, your league is begging for larceny. With several starters sporting nice hold ratings, wait until the relief corps tosses gasoline on the base paths.

Sure Martinez 1999 is a bargain but Martinez 2000 is the BARGAIN card. the $8.07 Slim Jones card is a nice bargain too.

As for Jim Kaat, you're paying extra for his * and in your rotation he becomes a 5 day starter.

so i made a few changes to my pitching.

i decided to upgrade to the 9.28 mil pedro. i dropped kaat and replaced him with a.donald, and i also swapped out radatz for sutter (my super reliever).

did i upgrade the team you think?

You've got Buck Weaver, you're all set!

That Pedro card is sick. Got him in a 90m cap in Forbes '57 and he's got a 1.64 era, 0.74 WHIP through 87 innings.

For your division, your team is a bit heavy RHBs.

If you're set with the RHBs, you can save $.85m by swapping Delahanty for Cuyler. Roughly the same card versus RHPs with advantage Kiki versus LHPs. For LHBs, Mel Ott, Wild Bill, and Shoeless Joe are good options.

I've never played or played against Roy Thomas. For the money saved on Delahanty, you can afford several upgrades in CF. If you can find the funds, Earle Combs works. Curt Flood looks solid under $4m.

Maury Wills will cost you a few more runs than Gary Templeton.
