team with "no" center fielder wins division at 89-73

Experimented by having only 4 players qualified to play LF or RF, and nobody at CF -- put Zobrist at 2nd, left Markakis on bench with empty slot in line-up -- HAL usually put Markakis in right and Stanton in CF, sometimes the reverse -- with an injury, Zobrist played OF

I've heard the "maximum worst fielding" thing doesn't happen when a corner OF plays CF out of position -- also, I think the arm stays the same (they're all minus three except Zobrist, who's minus 2)

as best I can tell, the X-tot X-out at CF was 91 and 45 with NO errors, so it "cost" 46 hits relative to a perfect CF (much less relative to an average one):

X-tot X-out at CF
Stanton 78 and 38
Markakis 5 and 3
Zobrist 8 and 4
Gordon -- HAL never moved him from LF

another interesting detail on this team: Blake Davis (.50m) in 193 AB: .290 .343 .492 .835 -- and in 175 AB vs. RHP: .309 .361.526 .887 -- also, although a "D" stealer, I had him on steal more and he had 9 SB and 2 CS

When an corner OF without a CF rating moves over to play CF, their arm stays the same but they drop 1 defensive rating.

ie. Markakis, who is a 1 in RF, becomes a 2 in CF.

Interesting experiment. As Viz says, a stud corner outfielder drops a little by playing CF, but shouldn't kill ya'. +

I hope this experiment works in real life. My Twins traded both Span and Revere for a pitching prospect and a couple pitchers coming off of arm surgery. The Twins may not have a legit CF all season!!
With Willingham's range in LF and Doumit's range in RF and an unproven rookie (Aaron Hicks) in CF, Twins crappy pitching suddenly gets even worse...if that is even possible.

If Twins end up 89-73 this season, I will buy all of my online Strato buddies drinks in Glen Head!

his card indicates an 350 on base in fenway against righthanders.

it's .360 in Fenway if every roll falls on his card and there's no single on an (x) and no clutch ABs -- obviously reduced depending on what RHP he sees -- on my team he was 20 for 63 with 3 HR as a PH -- also looked good in the (failed) post-season: 5 for 12 with 1 HR and 1 BB (and 1 E -- I started him at SS!, with Janish as a late-inning replacement)

also he has almost 8 extra base hit chances vs righties

Kev, if they win 70 games and you're still buying...I'm flying in for these drinks.

thanks, artie -- beware, though, that the more guys who can play OF, the less control you have over who HAL puts in the empty line-up slot that's necessary
