Friday Trivia

PostFri Feb 08, 2013 7:56 am

You did so well on the last question....here's another.

We all know that Mike Trout's rookie year was splendid and historic (even I know this, and I live in the baseball desert of France). Should he have been MVP over Miggy, I'll let you decide. I also suspect that some of you think that WAR is a statistical abomination concocted by and imposed on the public by spectacle-wearing geeks who would have loved to have been chosen anything other than last when it came time to choose up sides. But bear with me....

Trout had the highest WAR of any rookie in MLB history. Which automatically makes him the rookie CF with the highest WAR. What I want to know is, who are the rookies with the highest WAR at each position (the position where they played the most games their rookie year)? Two names at SS, as there was a tie.

C:
1B:
2B:
3B:
SS:
SS:
LF:
CF: Mike Trout (who did he replace, though?)
RF:

There are some easy names and not so easy.

I'm guessing McGwire at 1B, and Trout replaced Fred Lynn in CF?

Trout did indeed replace Lynn, but McGwire was only the third best rookie 1B in terms of WAR.

For somebody who doesn't like WAR (I saw your short-lived message 8-) ), you have done remarkably well.

C:
1B:
2B:
3B:
SS: Nomar Garciaparra
SS:
LF: Frank Robinson
CF: Mike Trout (who did he replace, though?) Fred Lynn
RF:

Piazza was second, just a whisker behind the first place catcher. Pujols is the second ranked 3B. And Ichiro is the second or third ranked RF (it depends if you consider the Federal League to be a major league). Pedroia is down the list of 2B. Jeter and Dropo are nowhere to be seen.

for 3B I also thought about Dick (aka Richie) Allen
C -Carlton Fisk?
RF-Ted Williams? (This threw my off, but I checked and he actually played RF his rookie season)

RF:

Teddy is just after Ichiro.

Right you are.

C: Carlton Fisk
1B:
2B:
3B: Dick Allen
SS: Nomar Garciaparra
SS:
LF: Frank Robinson
CF: Mike Trout (who did he replace, though?) Fred Lynn
RF: Shoeless Joe Jackson

Now come some of the tough ones (not so much SS but 1B and 2B may not be so obvious).
