Robinson or Stanky?

PostMon Feb 11, 2013 10:35 pm

Got the 1951 Jackie Robinson card under performing (as far as I'm concerned) in Huntington Ave. Anybody get good results from this card or is this normal:

.261/.348/.371

Used him primarily for a team theme, but he's the one hole in my lineup right now on a team that can be special. Looking to make a change unless anyone can talk me out of it tonight.

Not sure what you are looking for PJ, how about a team link?

Jackie is a good one (perhaps he is getting bad luck, bad clutch?, unfavorable park?)

In a slightly lower price range (assuming you are set on dumping him and will take a cap hit)-
Nellie Fox 6.68 (uber clutch) and Charlie Gehringer 7.2 are good LH OBP guys (not much on HR power)
Joe Gordon 6.43 has the glove and some pop
Edgar Alfonso 6.7 may be interesting if you are seeing lots of RHP

or damn the glove and look at Tubby Scales or Buddy Myer if you need some serious OBP of Jeff Kent for that HR trot

I'd like to see the team, but I will say Jackie Robinson is still a HOF 2b and I would not look to drop him too lightly

Team is here:

Jackie's been leading off and the team is doing very well, but his numbers aren't impressing me. Feels like with the kind of power this team has, someone who can get on base a bit more will provide more runs. I know there is no basis to believe this, but it seems like every league I'm in there are a few cards that just don't perform as usual. Not sure if there is some wrinkle in the code to cause the off year, but I try to move those players when I see them and it makes me feel good when I do because I usually get some production from what was a hole.

I don't like sacrificing the glove, and there are a few options, but Stanky is available and I know will get on base. I know the numbers aren't horrific, maybe I'm just antsy with a team that is on cruise control.

Well,
the team is past game 80, so I'm assuming a 20% drop penalty.

6.08 Stanky will get you better OBP at the cost of a little power and 2e8 vs 2e22 defense. If it is OBP you feel you must have, I can't argue against too vigorously.

I concur with Doc on this PJ; I would counsel against dropping Jackie. Stanky will bump up the OBP but your squad is looking good already and JRob's defense, speed and power, though not dramatically better than Stanky's, might make the difference in the playoffs.

Stanky will get a lot more walks but I do not think the increase in OBP will be sufficient to compensate for the decline in defense and the pop Jackie gives you.

Another factor is no DH. That means every time the pitcher bunts a runner to second you are trading walks to fill up first base as opposed to hits by Robinson that would drive that run in from second. So even if the OBP goes up with Stanky will the following batters hit enough extra base hits to drive Stanky in from first to offset that.

I think you are tempting yourself to fall victim to my most common malady, tweaking a team that does not need tweaking.

Exactly the kind of common sense I needed. It's hard sometimes to create a team and then sit back and watch without meddling...

Meddling is my speciality. I remember once having a team winning at a 70% clip and thinking if I just tweak these couple things this team could be special. Nearly ruined it but team was able to prevail in spite of me.

I am an incurable meddler also! What's more disturbing, I have sometimes replaced what I thought was a middling performer on an otherwise good team only to have the rest of the squad head south once the change was made! I know that statistically/mathematically such a change should have absolutely no bearing on other players, but as old Pirate broadcaster Bob Prince used to say, there's something to that "hidden vigorish!"

I believe in juju, and careful manipulation of the roster can infuse good or bad juju. I just wish I had read the juju manual before applying it.

Speaking of juju, Jackie Robinson went 0-11 last night with a walk and 2 runs scored. I guess he didn't respond well to the trade rumors.
