ASMI Favorite Franchise League

PostThu Feb 21, 2013 11:57 am

Welcome to the ASMI Favorite Franchise League

Each manager will claim the rights to players historically linked to a current MLB team or the Negro Leagues. For example, if you pick the Atlanta Braves, you own the rights to the Boston Braves, Milwaukee Braves, and Atlanta Braves. You will have exclusive rights to all player cards for that team and the stadiums for that team. You may not use cards or stadiums that are not associated with your franchise. Your team name in the league MUST BE your real team name, but your city can be anything you want. For example, the owner of the Braves can call his/her team the Atlanta Braves, Historical Braves, Momma’s Little Braves, Birmingham Braves, etc.

You will have $100m to build your team with an additional $10m slush fund. That is, I will create the league as a $110m league, but you must keep your “Roster Value” at or below $100m at all times. Because there will be no trading (no one is allowed to use your player cards), the slush fund will allow you to drop and pick up some players during the season essentially without a penalty.

The league will be with no DH (as baseball had no DH from the 1800’s until the 1970’s), thus the pitchers will bat. It will be an autodraft league, meaning that if the owner of the Yankees tries to draft 2005 Yankee Alex Rodriguez and the owner of the Rangers tries to draft 2003 Ranger Alex Rodriguez, the Strat-O-Matic computer will determine who gets him just like any other autodraft. Note in this example, the Yankees franchise owner is not allowed to use A-Rod’s 2003 Rangers card. Other league settings are 20% drop penalty and frenzy (no waivers period).

"Loonie Ball" (Justin) and I created an Excel spreadsheet of available players and stadiums, which we will email to all of you. The spreadsheet shows individual players, stadiums, and total player salary value for each franchise. It shouldn’t make a difference because we are all capped at $100m, but the four teams with the highest franchise value will be in one division and the four teams with the lowest franchise value will be in one division. We have determined that the following franchises have plenty of talent for a team: Braves, Orioles, Red Sox, Cubs, Reds, Indians, White Sox, Tigers, Twins, Negro Leagues, Yankees, A’s, Phillies, Pirates, Giants, and Cardinals. My beloved Mets and all other remaining teams don’t have as deep of a player pool. You are welcomed to take one, but it will be challenging to create a competitive $100m team.

If you would like to play, take the following two steps:
1. Sign up below with your user name and the franchise you want.
2. Send me an email at glennf@asmi.org identifying yourself by your sign-in name (and real name, if you'd like). I can then email you the spreadsheet.

I'll take the Tigers.

And you'll have a choice of your team's historical stadiums. So I'll get to choose between Navin Field, Bennett Park, Briggs Stadium, Tiger Stadium and Comerica Park.

You don't need to declare a stadium yet, just reserve a franchise.

2. Diamonds and Pearls - White Sox
3. Loonie Ball - Tigers
4. dpbeason - Phillies
5. The Biomechanical Man - Dodgers (since I was born in Brooklyn)

Dave, The Giants? Where's your loyalty to Bob Feller, Roberto Alomar, and the rest of the Tribe? :)
