hard lefty / hard righty bullpen strategy

PostMon Feb 25, 2013 4:00 pm

I'm playing in a shuffle league in Minute Maid; not many options in the player pool. Just wondering if anyone has had success with this type of bullpen strategy. I'm using Rivera as my primary reliever; he's set to F0, slow hook, setup, middle man, etc. I also have four unbalanced guys: Roberts and the cheap Page as quick-hook lefty specialists, Littell and Linzy as specialists vs. RHB. I'm hoping to limit the usage of those four, but I don't trust HAL to use them correctly. I could also grab the 9L .50 Bill Campbell to use against lefties, just to give HAL one more option.

Do you think this strategy will work?

swap out Cambell for a more balanced reliever, Pleis or Borbon and use them as mop-up. The specialist should be used the way use desire, make sure they are checked for quick hook. Rivera will get the work you want but may get tagged at times as he is only has a [2] inning tire factor.

I don't think you want to keep any pitcher beyond F7, rapidly gets killed not worth the salary. If you have 2 hard righties and 2 hard lefties HAL will use them well enough to make it work, so long as you are not expecting perfection.

A lot depends on your starters as well. If they only go 4 or 5 innings on average your unbalanced guys will have to pitch longer and against hitters they shouldn't be facing. If you have strong starting pitchers who go deep this has the potential to work.

I have had what appeared to be good luck with that strategy on a few teams if I just looked at pitching numbers.
But W-L record with it was not good.

I've never gone with a single balanced reliever. I've had better luck with one great reliever, one decent balanced guy in the 1-2M range, and then 3 unbalanced, going with 2 lefties or righties depending on the stadium. Haven't had much luck with Page, though I like the other guys.

I've had good luck with Page on several teams. I dropped him for Yerkes and you picked him up. Our league is heavy on BPHRs and Page gives up a ton. I like him better in a low-BPHR league, when his hard lefty has better effect.

PS. Your strategy worked well in our opening series - your relievers gave up nothing. :x

I find that it works pretty well.
