I'll go one step further and argue that Murray shouldn't be in the player set in the first place, as the card is based off of half a season (he didn't come up until July) that is completely unrepresentative of the rest of his career. He didn't have an ERA below 3.00 for any full season for the rest of his career. Based on that fluke card, he regularly pitches more than 300 innings per season -- much more than any relief pitcher in baseball history. I suppose the offensive equivalent would be getting 1,000 at bats out of Gates Brown.

Except that Strat-O bases cards on performance for that season, not lifetime achievement (or lack thereof). Murray had a great half season, resulting in a sick card. I've seen similar results from other relievers though, including Mike Marshall '74 for even less money.

The problem is in the game play / game engine, which allows for excessive usage. The super reliever is not new to Strat-O, and has been much discussed. Murray is an extreme example due to the R4. But the 'strategy' has been used successfully by managers for years.

I use the super reliever strategy all the time, not because I like it, but because everyone else does. Can't beat 'em, join 'em. Sort of like the players and their real life PEDs.

I have no problem with people using Murray, Hoyt, or any of the super relievers. I didn't have a problem with people using the 'super' offensive cards, such as Eddie Matthews, before they got replaced. I think Strat needs to (a) fix the cards, especially Murray, down to a R2 or (b) adjust the price of the super reliever cards.

No idea where I'm headed with this team. Just grabbing guys with decent value and will patch somethin' together down the road.

Finally, a catcher comes off the board... after a couple of middle relievers...
