Player Dumping

PostSat Mar 02, 2013 2:50 pm

In a 150M league I'm in, a trade was made yesterday between a contending wildcard team and a last place team with no chance of making the playoffs. Here is the trade which involved each player's highest priced card:

The contending team gave up:
Joe Wood
Don Drysdale
Carl Hubbell
Lee Smith
Rogers Hornsby

The contending team received:
Greg Maddux
Walter Johnson
Hippo Vaughn
Bruce Sutter
Ryne Sandberg

Does this trade put the 'player dumping' rule into effect? My guess is yes! Share your thoughts about this opponents trade.

maybe he really wanted the better pitching and felt he could absorb the downgrade from hornsby to sandburg. i don't really see it as dumping.

I don't see anything wrong with this trade except sending Hornsby to the last place team. So are you complaining that the contending team is dumping?

Perhaps I should not have responded with humor. To be totally serious I see nothing wrong with this trade and would be a little perturbed if i were one of the traders and was accused publicly of doing something improper.

Yes, the contending team received an upgrade in pitching. But at the expense of a serious downgrade at second base.
That is simply a case of giving up something of value to get something of value. There are not many cards that would tempt me to trade Maddux and Johnson, but Hornsby is certainly one I would take.

Bottom line: I think a trade needs to be a lot more lopsided before it warrants accusing someone of player dumping.

I'm in that league and didn't see anything wrong with it.

And Valen, don't think twice about how you respond. If people can't understand or see a little sarcasm or humor in a post, it's THEIR problem, not yours.

Terrible trade for the last place team as he took a huge hit with his pitching...huge....but just guessing since no one can really know his intent, he probably figured at least I get Hornsby so why not....I see the posters' point and agree, but don't think he has a case for dumping because everyone is blinded by Hornsby.

Late in the season I would MUCH rather see the last place team making trades than drops. He at least is not downgrading his salary cap by 20% and he gets a chance to try some good other cards. Maddux and Johnson obviously weren't working for him (or he would not be in last place).

bottom line, it looks okay to me.

OK, I made the trade and gave up Maddux and W Johnson since my team had a 6.5+ ERA in the league and were dead last. They just weren't making it for me. Playing in Fulton County '78 in a 150M league I kinda thought my pitching would get bombed..and they did. I'd rather have Hornsby at 2B. Yeah, I gave up the pitching and Sutter who gave up 27 dingers in 89 innings with also a 6+ ERA. OUCH! Oh well....lesson learned.

Sincerely and in last place,

Oh....here's the team link to the above... (the trade was with the Chics Dig the Longballs). Can I go back to my other teams dumping? They really didn't get dumped, they just left....
