Epic team collapse-What went wrong?

PostThu Mar 07, 2013 10:02 am

Started off 30-12, but 44-70 since. 24 team league. 5th in runs scored, 16th in runs allowed. Overall +40. Leader in team fielding with .991, only 54 errors and 164 DPs. I'm stumped at why this team has been so horrible the last 3/4 of the season.
Any insight?

I think your early success was... well luck or great dice rolls.

When u look at the #'s pitching wise, you've seen slightly more righties than lefties. Righties are hitting better. That doesn't help.

Hitting wise, here is your main problem. You've faced many more RH's than LH's and you hit only .239 against them. .315 OB with .409 SLG.

This is your problem.

Yeah, that was a big problem, but this was the killer 14-33 in 1-run games.

Had your offense been better, you probably wouldn't have many 1 run games.

Your pitching was actually pretty good for a hitting park.
But you just didn't have enough SLG to win.

You really need 5 guys (maybe more) with .500 or > SLG when you play in a hitters park.

Tulo was your only true .500 + slugger.

In a hitting park, I try to envision a 5.00 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP from my staff. If I can get that, I know it's my hitting that fails. Hitting wise, I want to end up with something close to .500 SLG as a team.

In this case, your hitting failed you.

First, my sympathy on your team's collapse. There is nothing worse in this game than to have your team collapse like that.

Second, don't discount bad luck. Your team was +40 and should have won more. It's easy to rationalize why you lost so many close games, but luck is the most important reason. Furthermore, your team had plenty of hitters who favored right-hand pitching, so I don't think it was a balance issue.

I have had teams perform much better than expected and much worse. The only common thread was that there was no common thread; it was just luck.

I agree partially with both of you.

I really believe looking at a horrible 1 run record is an artifact of bad luck. I've been on both sides and it sucks losing a lot of close game.

That said, Visick is right that if your team was better you would have less 1 run games. You've had a lot of turnover, but the thing that points to me the most is the number of guys that I rarely see used in 80 mil leagues on your team. I know it's 24 and pickings are slim, but typically you can still get some guys that are typically used. You team look like a miss-mash of guys never drafted.

Wound up 78-84 with a +58 diff.

The west division had 5 playoff teams. All 4 wildcards.

The funny thing is I just had a much weaker 83-79 team win a championship over a 100 win team. Oh that HAL .

Back in the 2003 game, I had a 98 win team that didn't even make the playoffs.

The divison winner won 101 games and the wildcard from my division won 99.
