This Game is Still a Joke. An Apology.

PostSat Mar 09, 2013 3:29 am

I'm playing my "free" team and this is still a joke. LH specialist is facing RH, 1's on defense are waaaayyyy over priced, Players hitting 120pts below ave. is not possible but happens, 30 hr's against a pitcher that has no hr's on his card is stupid, Stealing third for no reason, send 1-12 runners but not 1-16 runners, and 8/10 if you get RISP you hit the pitcher's card.
I thought it would get better, I was wrong. I will not waste money on this site. I'm better off wasting money on fantasy sites. I'm Out!

I am offering an apology to all that I might of upset.
I have to admit, as someone pointed out, I was making an emotional post. I was in the midst of a 7 game losing streak.
The reason I said Def. was overrated is it seemed my 1's were allowing base hits at inopportune times that ended up costing me games.
As for the person that said I don't understand SOM baseball. I've been playing FTF for over 30 years and I'm just frustrated with some of HAL's decisions, i.e. not pinch hitting in obvious situations, sending "sludge" runners, bringing in relievers for no reason. All that said, I won't be leaving quite yet. My team made the Finals.

Considering how you feel about the game, I think you're making the right decision. Of course, most of us here are having a blast. It's kind of like how I feel about cheesecake. I can't stand it, but I know it's my loss that this is so.

I am in my 25th season yet I have never won a championship.

My latest team has been in first place since the first series. On game 120 or so
they fell to second and at 130 remain there. For some time we lead the total
league standing and now we fight for a wild card spot.

I have been runner up 5 times.

Why all this misfortune?-The answer- I`m not as good an owner/manager as many
other guys. I dont crunch enough numbers or study up enough-in short
its not online Stratomatic-its me!!!

Its easy to say-"I was robbed" but some of the guys really put their heart and souls into this
and I think in the long run that is what wins and those that wont spend the effort lose and
that is how it should be.

the stats are based upon playing in the two leagues with 30 teams.
a 12 team league is obviously only starting the top players at each position.

your frustration comes from not understanding the game mechanics.

Then please explain the game mechanics that will make me understand why a 1-16 runner doesn't try to score but a 1-12 runner does. If the game mechanics are so different that the results on the cards mean nothing then that should be stated, such as "All results on the cards are obsolete, the game mechanics will determine each and every play independently from actual shown results."

I haven't seen a sim game that is as good as this one. Too many variables to juggle if you want to see players perform within one standard deviation of their actual stats based upon real-life stats with 30 teams versus simulation games using mostly top-tier players or one-dimensional bargain-basement types of players.

The pricing does seem a liitle out of whack, but with all the crappy defense played in real-life MLB play, I understand that defensive studs need to be priced higher than their counterparts.

If you can't or won't try to understand the simulation, don't let the door hit you on the backside on your way out.

Here's how I think about the 1-16 runner not trying to score: Infielder makes a great play to keep the ball in the infield, so the third base coach would lose his job if he waved the runner from second on to home. The 1-16 runner should try to score more often than the 1-12, but sometimes, as in the real game, he will be held up. Over the long season, my highly rated runners, advance a higher % of the time.

Misc. tab is great for showing the baserunning stats. On one recent team, here's my OPP-Adv-Out summary:

1-16 30-20-4
1-14 74-30-7
1-13 6-3-0
1-12 41-12-4
1-11 20-7-1
1-10 9-2-0
1-8 44-2-1

Looks reasonable to me.

Players hitting 120pts below ave. is not possible but happens, 30 hr's against a pitcher that has no hr's on his card is stupid

I understand the game can be frustrating sometimes. And I have been as vocal as any on things I consider to not function correctly.

But see it as a contradiction to want both hitters and pitchers to exactly match their real life numbers when operating in an essentially allstar environment with all the scrub players the stars normall pad their stats with removed. If all those allstar hitters are going to hit HRs approaching their actual rates they have to hit them against someone. And if all they ever face are Koufaxes and Alexanders, Halladays, and Verlanders or similar guys something has to give.

and 8/10 if you get RISP you hit the pitcher's card.

Don't believe this happens. I would bet my lunch money the breakdown over the long run is 50/50 in this situation just like in any situation. What this says to me is you are basing your logic on emotion and not actual obversation. Understandable as this thing does get more emotional than is logical given the statistical mathematical foundation of the game.

Not going to go the extreme some have and say don't let the door hit you on the way out. Here is my advice. Hitters in this allstar format are not going to consistently attain their real life totals. Pitchers are not going to be quite as good as their real life numbers. For example in most leagues we are going to essentially select the 50 or so least HR prone starters from the 150 or so available. That will mean fewer HRs hit by many sluggers. And we are going to eliminate all the guys hitting below the Mendoza line and have a guy at most positions that has some pop. Every team is going to have a Ranger/Yankees style lineup. So out 50 or so allstar pitchers are going to take some lumps.

This thing is a simulation and as such has limitations. Some things work really well and other things don't translate over as well. You will get a lot of enjoyment out of this hobby if you can accept the limitations.

I had Kershaw in last years set give up Back to Back to Back to Back Homeruns. 2 on his card and 2 on the hitters card. In real life I doubt he has ever given 2 let alone 4 in a row. It is just part of the game. A roll of the dice determines the outcome so it is hard to see any real in this game. Just put together the best team you can and learn the settings. This is the greatest game on Earth as far as I am concerned even with back to back to back to back HR's given up by Kershaw. Oh bythe way I won the game!
