Odd injury ratings

PostSun Mar 10, 2013 10:02 pm

Joe Medwick (1937) played in 156 games in a 154-game season, had at least 677 plate appearances, yet is an ital 1, which means he can be injured for up to three more games. How is that? I can cite any number of players with far fewer credentials who are a plane 1.

680 is the magic number for losing the 3 game eligibility.

Went and did some research as to why he could play 156 games in a 154 game season. Turns out in those days a game could end in a tie. This happened on July 25, Aug 8, and Sep 15.

So he played in 156 of the team's 157 games. All it takes is missing 1 game for any reason and you get an injury on your card. May not seem fair but those are the rules.

Still peeved at Showalter for resting Arod for 1 game the last series of the season, but that is a different story.

Interesting link. Look at the game times, the average time of game is about 2 hours. I never realized they played so many double-headers. On Sept 5 they played two 9 inning games in a total 3 hours 11 minutes and game 1 took only 1:26.

That is amazing. Its evident how much TV and commercial breaks have lengthened the game.
