15 walks by Lincecum

PostMon Mar 25, 2013 8:39 am

And he still wins. I'm not sure why HAL kept him in the game so long, running him all the way down to F0. I don't have any setting selected on Lincecum (all boxes unchecked for him), so it would seem that HAL wanted him to stay in the game for 160 pitches.

Anyway, I've never had a pitcher give up that many runs. Let alone be the winner. Crazy game this SOM!

If you lacked a long reliever that might explain why HAL had Lincecum on slow hook.
Interesting to not that HAL brought Smith in with score 10-7 and then Hernandez in at 10-8 with the notation he is setup.
Is that an indication that HAL wants the game score difference 2 runs or less before he looks for the setup reliever?

My starters threw complete games in the two games prior to that one, so the bullpen was completely rested. I have no settings for Middle and Mopup pitchers (hardly ever use them). The mopup would probably be the only thing that is close to being applicable.

If I was actually managing the game, I'm probably thinking about taking Lincecum out in the 3rd inning after he walked 5 guys in a row. But after those walks, HAL gets a double play, and then gives 2 intentional walks in that inning.

Of course, Smith coming in for a one batter home run when Lincecum finally got to F0 in the 7th didn't help things.

There is no rhyme or reason to any of it, your right in saying its a crazy game sometimes. I've had 9 walks from Maddux once, so anything can happen!

Most likely he was kept in because the walks break down like this
9-hitter card
3-pitcher card
3-intentional
he was not really as wild as the 15 walks suggest.

I don't think HAL is going to care much whether walks are off hitter or pitcher cards with respect to fatigue. But would not expect HAL to count the intentional walks against fatigue. So excellent catch by scumby.

So if you have no settings for middle of mopup pitchers to use seems reasonable for HAL to leave starter in, especially when he has the lead. If all you have is setup and closer type relievers then HAL is probably justified to make an effort not to use any of them early in a game. You would probably not be happy if HAL turned to Smith in the 3rd, Hernandez in the 4th, your closer in the 6th or 7the to be left in to get tired and lose the game late.

Some of the grief we give HAL is related to bullpens that are insufficiently deep, both in number of relievers and total of fatigue ratings.
