Subs?

PostThu Mar 28, 2013 11:41 pm

Hi,

Has anyone else had trouble with HAL making the correct sub to replace an Injured player? Here is my lineup vs rhp:

# Name Pos Def Bal BA OBP SLG BA OBP SLG Backup 1 Backup 2
1 Avila, Alex (L) C 2(0)e1 3R .317 .391 .537 .243 .352 .384 Donaldson, Josh (R) Gimenez, Chris (R)
2 Chisenhall, Lonnie (L) DH - 7R .241 .313 .379 .268 .311 .430 Betemit, Wilson (S) Cruz, Nelson (R)
3 Chavez, Eric (L) 3B 3e16 8R .429 .512 .600 .281 .348 .496 Betemit, Wilson (S) Donaldson, Josh (R)
4 Cruz, Nelson (R) LF 3(-3)e4 4L .071 .133 .071 .260 .319 .460 Cruz, Nelson (R) Mastroianni, Darin (R) I
5 Moreland, Mitch (L) 1B 2e6 E .154 .195 .180 .275 .321 .468 Betemit, Wilson (S) Donaldson, Josh (R)
6 Joyce, Matt (L) I RF 2(-2)e3 2R .046 .160 .091 .241 .341 .429 Cruz, Nelson (R) Mastroianni, Darin (R) I
7 Kendrick, Howie (R) 2B 2e16 3L .184 .225 .316 .287 .325 .400 Rosales, Adam (R) Flaherty, Ryan (L)
8 Escobar, Yunel (R) SS 2e14 1L .381 .458 .429 .253 .300 .344 Rosales, Adam (R) Flaherty, Ryan (L)
9 Jennings, Desmond (R) CF 2(0)e0 1L .256 .293 .385 .246 .314 .388 Mastroianni, Darin (R) I

Here is what happened in game #11
Hitters AB R H RBI BA
D. Jennings CF 6 1 1 0 .292
C. Gimenez DH 6 2 1 0 .235
N. Cruz RF,LF 7 0 1 1 .176
H. Kendrick 2B 6 0 2 2 .286
D. Mastroianni LF 3 1 0 0 .313
A - W. Betemit PR,1B 2 0 0 0 .400
J. Donaldson 3B 5 1 0 0 .000
M. Moreland 1B,RF 7 1 2 2 .227
Y. Escobar SS 6 0 3 1 .333
A. Avila C 7 1 3 1 .234

Great just the way I would have used Betemit and Moreland, but here is what happened in game 12:

A. Avila C 3 2 2 0 .260
L. Chisenhall DH 5 1 2 0 .206
E. Chavez 3B 4 1 3 2 .439
N. Cruz LF 5 0 0 0 .154
M. Moreland RF 4 1 1 2 .229
D. Jennings CF 4 1 1 3 .288
A. Rosales 1B 4 0 0 0 .125
H. Kendrick 2B 3 1 1 0 .288
Y. Escobar SS 4 1 2 1 .360

Why is Rosales playing 1B instead of Betemit?

who was the SP?

I just looked, and Rosales D is much much better, and, if it was a L SPer, HAL has been known to make judgements on his own, that supercede what we wanted him to do.

And honestly, if the pitcher was lefty, IMO it was the correct decision by HAL. IF the pitcher was RH, well, than HAL is as crazy as most think he is. lol

I have a team with a lot of players who can play multiple positions, and I have been pretty pleased with the computer manager, especially the defensive replacements which can get complicated on this team. I think the computer manager (computer Hal) is better than ever.
There will always be decisions that make you scratch your head, but that happens in real life. I was not pleased when my ace Kyle Lohse was pulled after 5 and 2/3 innings with only 2 hits allowed in a 1-0 ballgame. I did have Lohse on slow "hook", but I also had "aggressive" set on my bullpen.

Then the only thing to guess at was because of the defense. Consider HAL Forest Gump. In Fact, I think I will call HAL Forest Gump from now on.

Forest Gump musta decided that def was more important in this instance, than Betemits better bat against R pitchers.

Forest Gump does what Forest Gump wants to do.

Last night Trout (playing LF) got injured
J Montero pinch ran
then Altuvie went in for Montero and played second while E Cabrera switched from 2b to LF.
that is just insane.

I had Ryan Zimmerman get injured and expected the computer to do the subs like it has in the past with this arrangement - figuring it would put Chavez at 3B, Swisher at DH, and Laroache at 1B. But it put Espinosa at 3b and he doesn't even play the position. So it seems like it ignores the set up and only considers players that are not at other spots in the lineup already. I think something has changed....

1 Suzuki, Ichiro (L) LF 2(-3)e1 E .237 .258 .339 .283 .307 .390 Harper, Bryce (L)
2 Desmond, Ian (R) SS 2e19 1L .257 .278 .443 .292 .335 .511 Espinosa, Danny (S)
3 Cano, Robinson (L) 2B 1e6 8R .305 .369 .525 .313 .379 .550 Espinosa, Danny (S)
4 Swisher, Nick (S) 1B 3e17 2R .275 .383 .475 .272 .364 .473 Laroche, Adam (L)
5 Jaso, John (L) C 3(0)e2 8R .370 .431 .435 .276 .394 .456 Suzuki, Kurt (R) Montero, Jesus (R)
6 Zimmerman, Ryan (R) 3B 2e22 E .255 .328 .471 .282 .346 .478 Chavez, Eric (L)
7 Chavez, Eric (L) DH - 8R .305 .323 .644 .281 .348 .496 Swisher, Nick (S)
8 Harper, Bryce (L) RF 2(-4)e9 2R .222 .310 .365 .270 .340 .477 Swisher, Nick (S)
9 Granderson, Curtis (L) CF 2(+1)e0 1R .225 .316 .449 .232 .319 .492 Suzuki, Ichiro (L)

I had Michael Prado get injured playing third base last night and in the subsequent games Computer Hal batted John McDonald 4th against lefties. That was a surprise.

HAL has always been a little unpredictable making substitutions for injuries. I suspect that is a rather difficult thing to code. This may be one of those things we need to overlook a little to get max enjoyment out of the game. Generally as long as hal does a reasonable job of following my backups listed in the lineups for the next game I take that and run.
