Did ya ever notice?

You know how when you go to the player pages for each particular letter in Baseball Reference that off to the right there is a list of "best known" players. I assume it is the most searched for players and some of the players in the list I wonder about. For instance I was looking up some players in the S index and I noticed Chris Sabo and Ray Sadecki. Really? If any starting player who was a starter for five years or more had a more unremarkable and mediocre career than Chris Sabo. I can't think of one off the top of my head. And I guess I just never liked Sadecki even before my Giants traded Orlando Cepeda for him straight up. Then I really disliked him. And now of course I know it wasn't Sadecki's fault. But when your nine years old you don't care that it was just business. Still a bad traded though. Any thoughts on the "best known players".

I think they rotate those "best players" regularly and frequently -- just like the photo montage of induvidual players on the top left. I just checked and Sabo and Sadecki were longer to be seen.

Sabo and Sadecki showed up for me. Sabo's career is interesting, actually. Only four seasons with over 400 PA and he was an All-Star in three of them.

The "Best Known" list under Q is pretty funny: Chad Qualls, Jack Quinn, Dan Quisenberry. That's it. I'm surprised Jamie Quirk didn't make it.

That is interesting. Did not know that. The two things I remember about Sabo was those goggles and he was supposed to be the next big thing but it didn't work out that way. It's kind of like a guy we had out here in San Francisco in the early 70s named "dirty" Al Gallagher. A local guy, born in SF and went to college at Santa Clara in San Jose, real popular with the fans. Started with a bang in 70 & 71, but he was four years and out of the "Show". Sabo was kind of local Cincinnati guy wasn't he?

Sabo was a good player who got injured and was never the same. It happens. When you are talking about that level of play the line between average and good is very thin. A small drop in running speed or bat speed to make a huge difference.
