We have two of baseball's saddest stories in this league, Willard Hershberger and Hugh Casey. Hershberger is the only player to take his own life in the middle of a season. He slit his wrists at a Boston hotel after costing his team a victory. Casey had been out of baseball a couple of years when he called his ex wife on the phone, and blew his head off with a shot gun.

Hershberger's number was "retired" by the Reds later that season, but his #5 was used by Johnny Bench during his career.

I guess Donnie Moore was out of baseball when he took his own life.
