It's actually Van Lingle Mungo, long time legend here in Brooklyn with the Dodgers, also pitched for the NY Giants. My father mentioned him often.

JVM is the only pitcher to have thrown back to back no-hitters, which occurred in 1938. According to the Wikipedia entry, Euell Blackwell came close to duplicating the feat in 1947, only to surrender two hits in the ninth inning of the second game.

I remember back in the 1975 season that Nolan Ryan, then with the Angels, pitched a no-hitter against the Orioles. I was following his next start on the radio, which was against the Brewers, and Hank Aaron broke up a second potential no-hitter with a single in the seventh inning. He (Ryan, that is) allowed only two hits, and shut out the Brewers in that game.

Similarly, late in the '60s - 68, 69 or 70 the Giants and Cardinals participated in a double no-hitter. I believe I have the pitchers correct, but Gaylord Perry no-hit the Cards one day and then Ray Washburn did it to the Giants on the following day. I believe it was in Candlestick. If I remember correctly - maybe it was all a dream???

Not a dream. It occurred during the 1968 season, September 17/18 to be exact. Box Scores below:

Interesting, but the paid attendance at the second game was only 4,703. Seems rather miniscule.

Commissioner Dan,

With the 63rd pick in the draft I selected Dick Seay, I am requesting permission to return Dick Seay to the free agent list and replace him with Irv Hall.

Something is fishy about that last pick.

I somehow need to incorporate this player's name into my team's name.
