2 Rules Change Proposals

1) Reduce the prospect draft to 2 rounds. FOR

2) Allow one FA add/drop per season. The player being dropped would be cut from your roster immediately and the FA being added would be cut from your roster at the end of the current season. AGAINST

To be honest, though, it just seems to me that with 24 teams, it's almost like the old "reserve clause". There isn't a whole lot of player movement, and most valuable young prospects are already spoken for by the time they get a card. Not many exceptions - just a few each year.

I think that you could achieve more volatility, make things more interesting, and make the FA draft more valuable if you could introduce more player mobility. In that case, it would more closely mimic the way free agency shakes things up in real life. I don't need to start a new vote to be satisfied - I just thought I'd share my thoughts for the sake of stimulating thinking and discussion, even if it doesn't lead to any changes.

Here are some examples of ideas in my head:

-limit the number of protetected players each year to a number less than 20 - say 15, or 17.
or
-Really randomize things, by having all players who SWITCH leagues in real life from one year to the next become free agents in the year they switch - or maybe the subsequent year (might mimic the effect of a player who is nearing the end of his contract and becomes an unrestricted free agent). I.e. they become "unprotectable" in the year that the league switch occurs, or perhaps in the year following that.

Just some ideas, that might make the leagues more fluid and volatile from year to year.

I also want to say that I respect the managers that came before me in this league, and that I don't want to make any veterans to this league unhappy. I would rather keep it the same than ruin it for someone else.

As for my ideas, at some point in the future I might want to start a new 24 team keeper league that uses some of these ideas, and maybe with the drafting and league play starting later in the calendar year - like maybe in May - for personal preference reasons. On the other hand, if people grab onto these ideas and like them a lot, and if it doesn't upset anyone, all the better.

Cheers everyone!

Personally, I prefer the league the way it is. There may not be as much turnover in a team, but I like that aspect of it. You really have to work to build a successful team out of the drafts, and the teams develop some consistency and character. It is tough to cut down to 20, much less 15 or 17.

I totally respect where Geoff is coming from. Extra player movement is just not for me. A new league for those preferences might be a good idea.

I also like that our initial drafts are pretty well finished before the regular season starts. That way, the current regular season has a minimal impact on our personnel decisions. Makes the supplemental free agent draft more fun.

That's my 2 cents for the day. Hope your day is great! -Cal

It looks like it's not going to pass anyway but the add/drop rule would work like this: During the season you can drop one player from your 30 player roster and pick up a carded player not currently on anyone's 30 roster. The player you dropped would be off of your roster permanently (or at least until you draft him again) and the player you pick up would be a "rental" and be dropped from your 30 man roster at the end of the current SOMO season, and then be eligible for the supp draft (season 1) or the next year's FA draft. The purpose of the added player would be to cover for injuries or to replace an underachieving fringe player.

Your other ideas are interesting but not sure they would pass if we voted on them. Reducing the keepers can be put up for a vote if you want to propose it. Having players become FA's if they change leagues is too much randomness for me but there might be some other possibilities with something similar to that. If you do start a new 24 team league I might be interested in joining (strictly as an owner, no time for anything else), if you have some ideas that are different from what most keeper leagues use that would be the best way to introduce them.

1- yes
2- no as written. Yes if we change to KEEP the FA added.

What is the possibility of adding the unleashed set next year? The FA supplemental draft is weak after about four/five rounds. Just my thoughts. :)

1. For (I think once someone gets a card you should have to either add them or cut them that would add some players to a thin FA pool).

2. Against (what about just having the 28 players that SOM allows on a team on your roster and you can dip into the FA pool at will but once someone is in the FA anybody can get them).

Both of those ideas would mean less bookkeeping for our bookkeepers that are over worked.

What you're saying makes sense to me, Cal. Maybe I'll start up a new type of 24 team keeper league that I'll dub "the Marvin Miller 24 team keeper league". ;) Anyway, that's for another day. Thanks for your input, and travellingjack as well! :)
