Search function stinks

PostFri Apr 12, 2013 10:28 pm

I try to search for Sam Thompson in the ATG forum and get this:

Information
The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: thompson sam.
You must specify at least one word to search for. Each word must consist of at least 3 characters and must not contain more than 14 characters excluding wildcards.

I can search for Mickey Mantle successfully, why not Sam Thompson? What good is this search function?

Type in just Thompson, not Sam Thompson, and you'll get all the Thompsons in the game. Then, just click on Sam and you'll get both versions of his card. The search function only recognizes last names.

It might not be great, but it's a huge upgrade from we had at TSN. I'm pretty happy to have it.

Funny, when I type in Mickey Mantle, it tells me it is ignoring Mickey and searching for Mantle, but won't do that for Sam Thompson.

Search found 71 matches: mickey mantle
ignored: mickey

So I type in thompson and get this:

Information
The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: thompson.
You must specify at least one word to search for. Each word must consist of at least 3 characters and must not contain more than 14 characters excluding wildcards.

So we try something more exotic, Oscar Charleston:

Search found 3 matches: oscar charleston

How about Babe Ruth?

Information
The following words in your search query were ignored because they are too common words: babe ruth.
You must specify at least one word to search for. Each word must consist of at least 3 characters and must not contain more than 14 characters excluding wildcards.

What good is a search function that can't search for Babe Ruth?

PJ--Just use the last name of the player to search. Drop the first name. The search function works beautifully that way. You get a list of every player with that last name, including every card existing for that player. Click on the name of the player you're interested in and you'll get a smaller list of the cards for that player. When you click on the name, you'll be able to view that card. When you click on the salary, you draft that version. The search function is based on last names, not first names.

I think he's talking about searching for something ON the boards.

I have the same problem.

Try searching for someone and this is what happens...
ie. Sam Thompson

"Information

Yeah, I'm talking about researching the boards. For years I begged for a working search function, they give us this. We need to be able to search the boards for helpful advice.

It works for some names, not for others. Why is that? Why can I find threads with Mantle, but not threads with Thompson?

Because Thompson is way too common of a word, duh. Otherwise you would get results such as "Thompson went to the Thompson today and Thompsoned a Thompson."
