Optimal Bullpen Settings

PostMon Apr 08, 2013 4:55 pm

I seem to have the most difficulty with bullpen settings and would like other opinions.

In a league with $200M salary cap I have Kimbrel and Street at the back end of my bullpen along with Ogando/Perkins/Crow/Horst. How would you set these two up to get the most innings. I'm thinking,

Kimbrel as Closer & Set Up, avoid using before 8th
Street as Set Up (2nd one) and middle, avoid using before the 6th
Both with slow hook

I have a pretty stong SP staff so I'm thinking this will get me the bulk of the bullpen innings and the other 4 guys can fill in as necessary. Horst as an R2 for mop up innings, Perkins as lefty specialist.

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

$200 million leagues are tough.
I don't play them.
That being said...

I'd set Kimbrel the same way. IBB less / slow hook. Don't use B 4 the 8th.

Street. Personally I don't trust HAL in his ways, when you use a RP with such a strong closer rating as a set up guy.
I tend to grab RP's without a C rating. In your case, I'd list Street in all the other spots. Slow hook/IBB less as well.
(Tied & late, tied & 9th, behind and late etc...) Don't use B 4 the 6th.

I never anybody in the mop up spot. It's that trust thing with HAL.

I usually use 2 hard LH's and then 2 hard RH's.

however you do make sure if you want a guy to fill 2 roles, you put the eariler role higher on the list.

i.e. you want him to be setup and closer, make sure you have him as setup above where he is set as closer.

For instance, I typically (lower cap leagues so genrerally one 2 max 3 decent RP options for me) use my good closer and setup, closer, tied late, tied and 9th+.

For instance, current team:

Bullpen settings:

Hope that helps some.

Thanks for the feed back.

For most $80M leagues I've only set up for Closer, Set UP and lefty/righty specialist. Think I'll take this team and go a little more in depth with settings.

Have to admit that I didn't know this and have usually listed Closer before Set Up. Thanks for the tip.

Remember, HAL is just following code. He will go down the list until he finds a match. But because closer is listed above setup, especially if you are on maximize closer settings, he will hold off on using him. Notice I have Kimbrel with the most innings of my bullpen this way.

More proof on way I suck at this game I never realized that the order of how you put your relief pitchers mattered in the settings now we must go make some adjustments

thank you gentlemen

You can list closer first, then setup, then middle if you want to. If it's a middle situation HAL will just skip over the closer and setup anyway
