15 game injury to SP

PostSat Apr 20, 2013 8:12 am

I realize the downside of a 5-man rotation with non-* SPs is injury risk, but I'm still fuzzy on the circumstances where an injury roll comes up, especially in a DH league where the pitcher never hits. I use a 5-man rotation much more often, and my experience has been injuries are pretty rare - I usually make it through the entire season with each SP getting at least 32 starts. This is the first time I've had one go down for the 15-game maximum. But looking at the play-by-play I have NO IDEA how the injury happened. Was it a rare 6-12 combination on Jack Pfiester's card in the bottom of the 9th?

A 6-12 roll while facing the DH results in an injury chance for the pitcher.

195 innings pitched. 5 innings was the difference between 3 and 15 games

The amazing thing is how unlucky it is to get a pitcher injury in this simulated game, when in the "real world" pitchers are most likely to get hurt and have long-term injuries ...

1 out of 108 chances on the pitcher's card, facing a specific hitter in the lineup, and the low probability of rolling a max injury on top of that.

A 6-12 roll while facing the DH results in an injury chance for the pitcher.

And in non-DH leagues - is it a 6-12 roll when the pitcher is at bat???

I have always suspected there was some underlying code that limited pitcher injuries beyond just the likelihood of rolling 6-12 when a DH is up. If it were that simple pitchers would get injured just as often as DHs do. And that as we all have observed is not the case. I suspect it was put in for the same reason the rule that keeps your last catcher from getting injured was.
