Dazed and Confused

PostThu May 02, 2013 7:17 am

Need a little help here from the Strat community.

Had a great game going and in the top of 9th Hanley Ramirez led off against Long John Hughes and made it to first. My man Mickey Mantle stepped up and rolled 1-7 a groundball to 2bA++ which for the 43 years I have been playing becomes a single runners advance 2 bases. Ramirez has A speed. Instead it is a double play.

Could some one help me here. Below is the line.

Thanks

I think it's only a hit if the infield is playing in. Otherwise it's a double play on the ground ball A.

isn't the infield always in in the SOM in the 9th inning however?

Infield is not in without a runner at third base.

The game rules state:

"A "+" after the groundball means it is an automatic single if the infield is in or a runner is being held on."

This DP outcome must mean that Ramirez was not being held at first?? - hard to figure given his speed, the 9th inning of a tie game, no outs, etc.

The game summaries don't give us any info on whether HAL chooses to hold a runner or not.

Thanks for that feedback. I am aware of the infield in rule and believe that A++ applies also when someone is held. He could also be on 2nd or possibly even third and has to be held.
It is not a choice, Ramirez is an A* that means he has to be held. Hal really has nothing to do with a decision on whether to hold or not, its the rules of the game. Just as if you or I were playing at home, if you have anybody with a steal rating followed by a * he has to be held. That is written in the rules so how does this not apply here?

This is getting interesting so would appreciate any further feedback.

The rules, in both the board and online games, stipulate that the first baseman and the shortstop are considered to playing in when a runner is being held on first and a LH batter is at the plate. The first and second basemen are considered to be playing in when a RH battter is hitting. Hughes being a RH, Mantle would be batting left, hence the gbA+ rule dos not apply to the second baseman and the double play is correct. The same LH vs. RH pitcher rules apply when a runner is being held at second base--i.e., the SS would be edging over toward 2B (and thus considered playing in) if a LH hitter was up, not the second baseman, and vice versa.

Incidentally, in the board game, the latest rules do not require that an A stealer, or even an * runner be held automatically--it's at the manager's discretion. If an * runner is not held on 1b, then add +2 to his steal rating after the pitcher's hold rating and the catcher's arm are factored in.

And the online game allows you to play the infield back with a runner on third and less than two outs until the sixth inning--again, manager;'s discretion on the team strategy page.

In "hitter prefs" if I check "do not steal" for Larry Gardner (a D* base stealer), does the opposing manager know he isn't going to steal and therefore not bother holding him on? Does this also imply that HAL will hold on Frank Howard (E) if you check "steal more" for him?
If I allow Gardner to possibly steal, but then check "extra conservative" in team strategy to keep him on first base, does HAL hold him on because the chance of a stolen base is infinitesimal but not zero?
I guess the question is when and if the * is overridden.

This is a guess but I think that Hal will hold a runner with the * even if you check him to not steal. Same also for Frank Howard. Hal won't hold him no matter what.
