Re: the rule change. Yes, this rule does nothing to prevent a liquidation sale to try to win now. The future considerations bar does prevent the completely unrealistic scenario of a rental player. I know that SOMO has a lot of unrealistic features but I like to keep things as close to real MLB as possible. If Detroit fell out of the pennant race they would not trade Justin Verlander to a team and then agree to get him back after the season.

I know similar scenarios have occurred a few times in baseball history but they are rare and I don't see them happening now, with the players union, commish, media, etc. objecting to that type of trade. What if Verlander gets hurt while pitching for his rental team because the rental team manager had him throw 160 pitches in game 7 of the World Series? Teams do trade for veteran players, especially pending free agents, with little to no intention of bringing those guys back for the next season but they don't pre-arrange the deal with the old team to send the player back.

There are some variables with a keeper league, I knew I was not going to bring Oswalt back because he wasn't very good in '11, a real GM could only guesstimate how he would do in the future. However, trading a veteran for a draft pick (well not draft picks in MLB but the principle is the same) or young player is still relatively realistic and something that happens all the time in MLB. Trading a player and agreeing at the time of the trade do get that player back does not happen.

As far as players to be named to be named later, that's not that big of a deal to me, but it just seems like if an owner leaves with ptbnl deals pending it would be messy for the commish to figure out how to compensate the teams involved.

That last comment by travelingjack made me think that with a rental scenario, we could see some really inequitable deals and unrealistic ones.

Ex: I don't make playoffs and I rent Votto, Weaver, Price for the rest of the season to a single team in return of a 3rd rounder... Because it's just a rental, we tend to do it for almost nothing. This could change dramatically the end of a season.

So, I've changed my mind (again !)

"All trades must be for either players currently on a team's roster or draft picks. Trades for future considerations or players to be named later are not allowed and will be voided. Team's may not trade players to a team with the intention of reacquiring the player at a later date."

I would vote yes on this as long as the PTBNL is not a player already involved in the deal. That would eliminate rentals, which is the main ethical concern. Having done these deals already in this league, I understand and agree that we should eliminate them now. But I don't see what's wrong with a PTBNL. Ex: jflatour trades me Joey Votto for a 4th round pick and a PTBNL. The PTBNL turns out to be Elvis Andrus. I just don't want to send him until the season is over. Who does that hurt?

So if the proposal is changed to eliminate the second sentence but keep the first and third sentences, I would endorse it.

What a sad exit that was...but I can't complain with two championships already in the league. Our days of dominance are over, and henceforth we begin the long march to obscurity and draft pick starvation.

First, I need to complete a couple trades from the old era of freewheeling rentals.
