Hot Streak

PostTue May 14, 2013 12:13 am

After the games of Friday May 3rd, one of my keeper league teams was 59-40 and in first place in its division, having just been swept on the road by another division leader.

After tonight's games, this team is 86-43 (that's 27-3 over the past 10 days) including a return sweep at home over that division leader. That's unprecedented, for me.

Conventional wisdom on this site is that the team that finishes with the best overall record usually loses in the first round, and that posting about how well the team is doing pretty much guarantees it. Don't believe it, the dice aren't that smart, nor are the programmers and data clerks who run the site that evil.

Nice team... Strong performances across the board.
Aroldis (!), Posey, Ajax, Chisenhall, Gutierrez, Choo.. i can go on and on.

By the way, I have used Guti in three leagues with good results in all three. He looks like a great platoon CF, and a rare cheap CF platoon who has good fielding

Gutierrez is actually my platoon DH against LHP - can't play him in a corner on this site and I'm not sitting Ajax voluntarily. Viciedo plays LF against lefties and Murph moves over to RF. Davis plays 1B against lefties. and DH's a little - I didn't have him active at the start of the season, was trying to play Alvarez at 3B but gave up a couple of weeks before the hot streak started.

In the last 30 games I have outscored my opponents 209-87. That's a Pythagorean WL% of .852, so I have been overachieving during the streak. But my overall Pythag is .684, so my team is still underperforming according to that measure. Interestingly, my Pythag after 99 games was .606, and my actual was .596, so I was .010 behind. With my streak, where I have outperformed my Pythag by .048, I have fallen farther behind in overall Pythag (now -.017). Strange stuff, this math.

Hot streak is over, including this weird game. Note the writeup, which can't cope with a combined no-hitter and gives Mitchell Boggs, who pitched to and retired two batters, credit for a perfect game.
