rookie manager

PostSun May 19, 2013 2:34 am

I am a rookie manager, who is getting tired of losing to more experienced managers. Is there any way that I can find a league with managers of my same experience?

Why don't you try setting up a league that advertises itself as a league for new managers? Put some words like that into the league name, and post it as such on this board.

If you'd like some constructive suggestion relating to a past team, you can post a link to your team page on this board, or you could send me the link by a private message, if you'd like. Do you know how to send a private message?

Never be afraid to post your teams and ask for advice. Stratties on this site want new members to have a good experience and be competitive so you will be a regular. Here are some tips from my own experiences:

1. Always be able to hit right handed pitching. That is almost always priority 1 for me.
2. Find hitters/pitchers that fit your stadium. Your favourite players should be the ones that help you win, not your fave mlb players.
3. Seek out value player cards that produce and allow you to spend more on big targets (jamey carroll is a cheap value card..he hits gets on base and has decent defence at 1.76 mill)
4. dont overspend on bullpen. i often see 5 to 7 millions dollar relievers getting only 50 innings. learn how to get the max innings from your best pitchers.
5. platoons. platoons can often get the same results as an 8 million dollar player. 2 to 3 platoons in a lineup can help thwart an opposing teams ballpark or strategy.
6. get some outfield arms so other teams arent circling the bases on aggressive settings.
7. great defence up the middle. catcher, 2nd, ss and cf.
8. i found that early on the best way to win is in an extreme park.
9. review a games entire set of dice rolls. see how often certain numbers come up. then review player cards and put greater weight on those numbers, 6's 7's 8's etc...

The above advice is right on the money.

I might also add that I played the Vets most of the time early on for a reason. They did and will have again Manager Rating listed next to the Managers names when they get it done. Strat said it will take time to get this done. This lets you know who has more experience in the game. Watched the teams that won and checked out how they did it. I found 2 managers that played this game well and followed their way of doing things and ask many questions. We do want new players and even the guys in your own Division will help you beat them! Ask questions, post teams and ask questions. You might not always get the answer you like and some might sound down right rude but they are not. Some of these guys are all about numbers and just tell you facts. You can get really good advice. Check the threads all the time and checkout the new General Strategy Thread as you will find great stuff in that one. Many Vets have spent a great amount of time posting in that one to help everyone out. That is where you find the numbers guys doing their thing.

Thanks for all the advise. I will try some of these strategies. How do you post a team?

I don't know the tek talk but it is up in the search part where the address of whatever site you are on is. Just copy and paste to your message.

This is my first post. I've played strat-o for years, but only recently did I start my first online team. I'm pretty aware of how to count cards and build team strategies etc, but I'm still new to this, so I'd appreciate any thoughts on my team.
THIS THING
http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/1024669

My initial strategy, which I formed by poring over the 2012 set for hours, was to use a 4 man rotation with righty-oriented righties, with a swing man 5th starter who could substitute against lefty-heavy teams. I wanted a heavily specialized bullpen, which I got very cheap. I then drafted a heavy-platoon team where lefties had high obp and righties hit for big power. I chose target field because it is more righty power friendly but pitcher friendly overall, as my starters allow many HRs. My only mistake here was Chavez, who has too many bp HRs, but I don't know who to replace him with. I also picked several heavily injured players, figuring a handful of games missed here and there isn't too big an issue. Anyway, I'd appreciate any thoughts, advice, or criticism on my approach, since I'm new to the online game.

Hey Chase

I didn't know you were also NYY82602. Obviously we've already discussed your Arroyo-Detwiler pitching strategy (which you've smartly amended), so I wont address it again. However, I do feel i should repeat my previous advice to use your value spent on Montero and replace him with a lefthanded or righty-hitting righthanded catcher to platoon with Rosario. You could use the substantial value remaining to upgrade Chavez (whom you already mentioned), Berkman, or Cowgill (who brings neither power nor speed to the table).

Anyway, good luck on your season again.

Sorry but that is not me. This is the only name I am playing in this game. Chase is my son and Ally is my daughter.

Well..............there is a topic thread right under this one called "MY First Strat Online Team" posted by NYY82602, which happens to be your team's owner's name, and addresses the exact same team you post on this topic thread. On that topic thread, I advised you to not stick with Arroyo and Detwiler because they would be hammered by left-handers and right-handers, respectively....which they were. Go check that topic thread out, if i didn't have that discussion with you, someone must have logged in to discuss your team, which would be curious.

Anyway, you made a smart move in abandoning your Detwiler-Arroyo strategy, since it wasn't working for you.
