Geoff posed the following questions earlier in the thread. I'll take a run at them now.

It probably goes without saying, but...

One of the "3D chess" thoughts I've been having about how to make my draft picks is...that I think we need to try to make our picks fit into the salary cap more or less FOR EACH SEASON - 2007-2012!!!!

Am I right? Yes you are correct.

If so, this means that we have to try to have our high value picks be somewhat complementary to each other in terms of "peaks" in their salaries year by year. Again, correct.

What happens if we're accidentally over $80 million for one of the card years? What can we do about that? A few posts ago it was said that we can't "hide" our keepers, but what if we go over $80 million in a particular card year - especially the first few seasons when we have the highest keeper requirements? (I guess in the later years we can manage being over by "dropping" a high salary keeper, but then is he gone forever after that season?). Managers will be responsible for entering each season at or below the salary cap. I expect there to be some years when this is hard to do with the players drafted. If so, the manager whose payroll exceeds the $80M will have to make trades as necessary to get below the cap. This could be beneficial to other teams who see the manager's dilemma and try to extract more than they might otherwise get in the trade. We see it happen all the time when teams trade players rather than lose them to free agency. I've tried to replicate that here.

If my interpretation is right, then we really have to watch our salary cap management, especially for the first few seasons. No point drafting Lincecum if I have to drop him after 2011 - wait, that's a bad example - hmmm.... Again you are correct.

It should make for some very interesting trading situations each year. It's kinda like making MLB a true salary cap sport. (In the NHL, each year GMs make lots of trades to make sure they get under the salary cap each year).

So, for example (#1), if in the year 2009 your "preliminary" roster still had your 22 keepers, but you were clearly going to be over your salary cap for that year, this means that you would have to trade one of your keepers who had a high salary in 2009, so that you could simultaneously have your minimum 20 keepers for 2009, but also get under the salary cap - correct?

Or, can you just "drop" the "high salary" keeper to get under the salary cap? Again, if you drop a keeper, presumably you can reacquire him later - but he's also "fair game" for any other manager - right?

Presumably, if you reacquired the keeper in a later year, by trade or free agency, he retains his status as a "keeper" for you, right?

Second question (#2)- same as before - it's 2009 and you're over the cap, but you only have 20 keepers left, due to a 2 for 2 trade in the prior year (2008). Would you have to reacquire a "low salary" keeper by trade (or free agency "add" if he is available), in order to simultaneously meet your 20 keeper requirement and the salary cap?
