75. gfdwarf07 - Earl S. Smith 1921

There are four different years under Earl Smith, but the 1920 Earl Smith of the St. Louis Browns is an entirely different individual than the other three Earl Smiths listed as catchers. Both overlapped in the major leagues for a couple of years.

I think SOM recognizes them as the same ballplayer, however, so once either one of them is selected, the other is not available.

That reminds me of the two Alex Gonzalez who both were SS about 10 years ago.

Back in the 70's and 80's I would see D. Evans being talked about and had to think if they were talking about Dwight or Darrel.

2 catchers named Hal Smith had careers with almost identical career spans in 50s and 60s..they both played for the Pirates tho one only had a few plate appearances with Pittsburgh.

Yes - the more prevalent Pirate Hal Smith was one of the guests on a recent MLB reunion of the 1960 World Series participants. Until Mazeroski's heroic and historic home run in the bottom of the ninth to win the game and the Series, Hal Smith had been the hero in the bottom of the eighth when he hit a 3 run homer to cap off a 5 run rally to pull the Pirates ahead of the Yankees, only to have the Yankees tie it in the top of the ninth, negating Smith's heroics and setting the stage for Mazeroski's dramatics in the bottom of the ninth. I remember the "other" Hal Smith as a journeyman catcher for the Cardinals in the late 50s and early 60s prior to McCarver's arrival on the scene.

Good point, and if Vern Law had not been pulled he would have been the winning pitcher, giving him three wins in the series. Rick
