the horse is already out of the barn, but at the very least, the fix should be, "yet to appear in the majors," and get rid of random order.

Why always complain about rules to the last minutes when we voted on that months ago (and everything had been adopted in a legit way If I remember) ? Meat, In the F.A. draft, you had pick #3 and 15 that you traded to Killermarc for JoBat. And you talk about that this prospect draft could crush your future ! That was your decision to get a 32 years old slugger to try to get out of the West but you can't have both: Guys like Machado that hit like JoeBat right away. Like someone said to me, when I proposed to trade my #3 prospect pick for a F.A. pick in the first round, Prospect are like lottery tickets much more than a guy like Machado or Darvish. And like Jay just said, they don't affect game immediately. So, the incidence Is less major with those picks. Us too, that pay 25$, like to draft high sometimes. That was my 2 cents on it.

Offering my picks #10 & #12 for a pick in the top 6 (depending on what's left when will be there) and a very late pick of round #2 if you have that in stock.

I know that there's a lot of talents available in that draft, so If you want to try to build, here's your chance.

Interesting post, Meat. Here was your original vote on the topic:

2. Prospect draft or not. If so, how many players, how is the draft order determined, and when must they be promoted or released?

he's meat padres proposal

padrenurgle - Yes. 3 players per team. I think it's VERY IMPORTANT to limit the number of prospects we can keep, otherwise the annual free agent draft will suck. There will never be any exciting new players in the standard draft if we have 120 minor leaguers locked up. Very few per team, 3 or 4. Draft order random and snaking. Minor league players may be kept forever or until carded for the first time. Established players who don't get carded one year are not eligible as "prospects."

at the very least, the prospect draft needs to be in March before the season starts. so far, this draft has been all carded players. if we had had it in the past, trout for instance, never would have been available to a team that had 57 wins. by the end of this first round, every first round pick that would have gone next season will be gone. as for trading for Bautista, that's a totally different deal...I knew who was in the first round, and wanted a guarenteed homerun guy as oppossed to speculating on whether a trumbo or cespedes could maintain it over the years.
in march, imagine the difference between wondering what shelby miller might be like, and knowing, so far at least, he's been one of the best pitchers in baseball...or whether the rangers would call up profar or the other top prospects, or try to avoid their super status. because I wrote something in the past before knowing how this would play out could confirm I was wrong, but doesn't make this a workable redistribution of future talent.

here's last year's first round, before prospect draft insitution...how many of these guys would have been available in this draft?
1. manleeman - Mike Trout
2. meat - M. Trumbo
3. jflatour99 (from jameszimmer via tcochran) - Craig Kimbrel
4. manleeman (from ggrover) - Chris Sale
5. padrenurgle1 - Paul Goldsmidt (proxy)
6. meat (from tcochran) Ed Encarnacion
7. JMP1 - Brett Lawrie. 3B TOR
8. josephkendall - Aroldis Chapman RP CIN
9. manleeman (fm CAT via grover) Freddie Freeman 1b ATL
10. lumberco Kenley Jansen RP LAD
11. JMP1 (from killermarc) - Jason Kipnis
12. jflatour99 - Michael Pineda SP

if the rule was, has yet to appear in a major league game for the prospect draft, it would level things out considerably.

You have a point there. I like the actual rules about the prospects but doing this draft in march for instance could be even more in the spirit of this kind of draft. Not sayin' that I would change that right away because It's too late, but open to that change for the next prospect draft.

And for the Bautista example, I maintain. You can't go for the future without a dose of speculation. We all assume that guys like Machado should be good for a long time but nothing is safe. But we can almost be sure that he has 10 more years to play than guys like JoBat. It's a matter of direction you wanna take: rebuilding or not.
