SAFE PICKS

PostTue Jun 11, 2013 3:32 pm

Some players are nice safe picks even if they are not very exciting or sexy for Strat-O-Matic. One such guy is Michael Bourne who I felt may be a little overpriced but he performed quite well for me on a recent team. He finished with a .270/.340/.370 line with 21 Doubles, 8 Triples, and 8 Homers along with 42 SBs and solid defense. The thing about a player like Bourne is; he is going to play every day, field well and steal bases. And fielding and speed seldom ever slump.

Who are some players you guys feel are nice safe picks for an 80 million dollar league?

Has anyone used David Wright yet? I tried for Miguel Cabrera in my most recent league and wound up with Wright, I am thinking of keeping him, for this season in Fenway. Any thoughts. Thanks in advance for any comments. Good luck to all your teams!

David Murphy seems like a real bargain, any thoughts on him?

I fell into Murphy in a league that just started and decided to keep him (I was going for Prado). His card looks great for a pitchers park. I love Wright's card but haven't used it yet. 3b this year I think you have to have him or one of the stars or go cheap, the middle tier isn't that good and it's a weak position.
I love 4 2bman for cornerstones, Pedroia is my favorite, but Hill and Phillips (and Cano, haven't tried him yet) are all gold.
Peavy can perform like the elite pitchers for less money. Recently had him on a team with Dickey and Peavy put up better numbers than Dickey

I've used Wright more than I should have. Use him towards the top of the lineup with that OBP and he works out just fine.

For me Braun in any park you are going to get 290-320/360-390/550-600 ive had him at least 6 times never a disappointment. I had Wright once in a 24 team league and he was okay high obp 25 homers in Miller. Those are nice numbers for Bourn I haven't seen him come close but once to those in any of my leagues most of the time he hits more like 230-250. I still think he is overpriced id have to see do that in a few more leagues to change my feelings towards him maybe in a pitchers park but not in general.

Ryan Zimmerman is performing quite well for me in Fenway in a 60 million dollar league. And Corey Hart is 3rd in MVP voting, he is a perfect fit for Fenway.

Murphy in Safeco, 266 ABs (I sometimes sit him against LHP, though, and use a cheap RH tilted to LHP)"

.294 .337 .524 .861

well worth it, so far

Thanks for the comments guys. I like Murphy...

Hey Steve F., I had Martin Prado in my first 2012 league (I like that kind of player who can do a little of everything, very versatile) He was a total bust for me in the first half of the season but he did recover and play well in the playoffs. Overall I do not know if I would want him again at his price though .... Murphy just seems like a real bargain, maybe not for a lefty bomber park.

A. Pagan (won't DP batting 2nd. speed. triples)

C. Lewis (will give up homers but is reliable)

A. Laroche in LH park.

Angel Pagan interests me. It is hard to find guys who do not have a lot of double plays (ground ball A) on their card. Pagan's speed and defense comes in handy in any park and he is not too expensive.

I noticed there are not too many clutch hitters, almost all are negative clutch. ( I do not really use clutch when I play with the CD-ROM. The sample size is too small and I don't like the way SOM does clutch.) There is Torii Hunter and a few other guys who are positive clutch. Who are some good clutch hitters for the 5 spot in your lineup?

I never looked at clutch. It really hurts with somebody like Aybar. He's always at the bottom of the lineup against RHP. So he never pushes anyone across with two outs.

Pagan is a really boring card but it works if you have power elsewhere.
