New Topic for Discussion

PostWed Jun 12, 2013 10:29 pm

As you may or may not have noticed, I purposely traded away all of my this year talent for future picks and talent ala the Marlins.

Someone brought up a point for discussion- it was brought to my attention that my intentional tanking, specifically the fact that I did not have a true 2B(as I really wasn't paying attention/didn't care for this year, I traded away and neglected to draft an eligible 2B.), could call into question the overall league integrity. In this particular season, I could have impacted the outcome of the wildcard by benefiting Stoney by his being in my division. It didn't happen that way, but it could have.

The question is this, do we want to implement a rule (probably starting next year- although that is open for debate) requiring at a minimum an eligible player at each position?

I do not have a strong opinion either way, so please feel free to voice your opinion in this matter so we can decide if we want to change something for the league.

I wouldn't necessarily be in favor of the position requirement outside of the SOM defaults. I have purposefully gone without a 3B with Votto/Cabrera/Pujols in HCKL (when none were qualified 3B) because I thought it made my team better. I've done the same thing with OF (example carry no LF no force start a CF there) because I was strong at the CF. However, I'm not in favor of doing it to tank. Point I'm trying to make is that it is w/in SOM lineup minimums, and it can be done to benefit your team as well--in a way that is realistic to what a MLB team would do with similar roster considerations. (with a defensive penalty).

Hey DT, everyone is responsible for their own teams. if a guy decides to rebuild and his team falls to pieces as his young guys develop, then that is life. That happens in real life all the time. The purpose of keeper leagues is for us to live with the highs and the lows of owning a ball club. Part of the fun is bring your team from the abyss and build a championship. I didn't think any of us here had an issue with you doing a Marlins impersonation. I mentioned the 2B thing out of pure amusement. You have no where to go but up. There should be no rules added to this league. As long as someone can field a team, it's all good!

I have to disagree regarding the positional requirements.

I don't see any issues with trading current assets for draft picks/younger players in order to rebuild. In USKL top draft picks are very important. DT had a great example of this trading Ortiz for two supp draft picks and 1st and 2nd round FA picks. He has the lowest team salary going into this past season and inevitably was going to have the worst record. Yes, this can influence WC races but over the life of the league it probably doesn't happen that often.

Tanking is a little different animal. I think we can all agree that starting scrubs when there are better alternatives just to lose game is tanking and something that we do not want. I don't look at all league boxscores so if you see something that concerns you let me know.

The positional requirements are a different animal. If Fowldawg wants to play Pujols at 3B with his 4e65 in order to get his bat into the lineup that's his choice. DT's 2B example is different. He has 4 2B eligible players on his roster (Solano/Punto/Rugledge/Pennington) but none of them are on the active roster so a non-2B rated player filled that position.

While the game engine will let you do that I have issues with it. I'm not accusing DT of anything but this can be used to game the system and I think that's against the spirit of fielding a baseball team.

I believe this does need a little more discussion and am sending out an email for others to chime in.

I have no issue with the trading DT did.

Tanking should be frowned upon, i.e. playing players with lesser value when better alternatives are there.

Positional requirements, in Dt's case, he probably should have brought up a 2B to play, since he was out of it. A competitive team, for me, If a team wants to play Pujols, Cabrera, Fielder and Konerko in their INF spots, have at it. I'll enjoy circling the bases on that defense

I guess I'm confused, did DT not have a player on his team that was eligible at 2b?

I didn't even know that was possible with the game engine, if that's the case.

Personally I don't care if he traded away this year players for future value, and I have no problem with "tanking" as sacrilegious as that sounds. In fact, I expressly have in the rules of the three keeper leagues I run, that if you want to tank you can, it's your choice. After all it's your $25 you're flushing down the toilet.

Now, I also have a clause that says you must have a legal TSN roster consisting of 25 players at all times during the season( until call ups when it can be 28), but somehow we don't have one in the rules for this league, but again, I didn't think you could have a team without a player eligible at each position. To me that should be the minimum, doesn't matter if its a 5e65, still should have a player that has played a specific position on your 25 man( in this case 2nd base).

that's my .02 ;)
