Playing "3"'s 2b and SS

PostMon Jun 17, 2013 9:33 am

I was wondering if I am out of my mind (my wife already thinks so, but thats another topic)..anyway, if playing 3's up the middle at 2b and ss is asking for disaster? I have a 2 in cf. I maybe answering my own question as I type, but I have a 3 at 1b and a 4 at 3b. So maybe I do need to upgrade up the middle....

Playing a 3 at both SS and 2B seems like playing with disaster. On a team I just live drafted I have Starlin Castro (a 3 at SS) in a HR park but I went with a 1 at 2B (Phillips). I thought that was risky but a 3 at both? They better hit .330 and steal lots of SB to make up for their gloves. Your pitchers may demand to be traded. :D

Theme league with Kozma @ SS and Falu @ 2B.

Of course I have Ryan and Beckham coming in as late defensive replacements.

It can be done, as long as they hit enough.

I'd prefer seeing more hitting on that squad.

You're in a hitting park and IMO, you're light on hitting.

I had a poor draft and ended up with Fontenot playing 2nd against righties--in a weird platoon with Zobrist & Snider in RF--before the season began this teams fielding was poor & I thought they would be done in by the bad fielding--indeed they have made the most errors but they can hit--are playing well & Fontenot had a good year. I don't like to play a three fielder at 2nd or short but there are exceptions.

Miller, if I had that team I would just play Zobrist and Snider full time, keeping Zobrist at 2b. I can't help notice you're in Turner field again :D

It was my plan to play Zobrist at 2nd and Platoon DeJesus & Snider in RF--I whiffed on CF & ended up playing DeJusus in CF. Sometimes mistakes work. I though I would give it 40 games (5% penalty) and it was going so well I just stuck with it.

When using players with poor defensive ratings you need them to produce offensively enough to overcome the extra runs they allow because of the lesser defensive skills. I have had a decent(.500) team using a prior years "4" rated Uggla/HanRam stud power combo, so I would say you can definately win with two "3" rated players. That being said, they have to be good offensively and it would help the division and/or league as a whole played into their strengths. The two posts above are great examples of someone putting this into practice. Fontenot is not "great", but for .82 he is having a nice platoon year and allows monies to be spent elsewhere for someone who may be great. All that being said, when I put a team together and I look at my infield defense and it is similar to yours, I know I am probably in for a long season. That Turner Field team with Fontentot really has a ton of errors(141) to be so successful

The bottom line is you can win with a 3 or two at the important defensive positions.
