here is my latest swing at it......sure would like to see the team that did it, i thought all the stars aligned for this and i only managed 1717
any ideas on how i could see that 1795 team?
Well, 1717 Ks in 1432.1 IP is not exactly bad. That 1432 IP is pretty standard for a 162 game season, so to break the record you have to average a bit more than 1.25 Ks per IP. That isn't easy, especially since half the ABs fall on hitters cards.
One way to put it is that to break the record, you would need to average 400 Ks per SP, plus get 196 Ks from the bullpen. Again, that's a pretty tough expectation to meet. You got more than 196 Ks from the bullpen, but only Randy Johnson topped 400 Ks among the starters. The others weren't close.
One strategy might be to try to maximize SP Ks and innings--go with high K starters with 8 or 9 durability-- then use a high K super-reliever to cover as many relief innings as possible. This might actually work best in a 140 league, where you could afford top pitchers--but there's also be more draft competition for them.
So, I think the record could be broken—it might help to be in a division full of high strikeout hitters, so the batters could help-- but even getting this close is a real achievement.
