I yield to the more experience players on this Ichiro Suzuki value debate. I will just say he does not fit my scheme. I would rather pay less for a less sturdy player and spend a little more on a backup who can help in other areas. There are many successful philosophies. But think about this, you are going to be spending 4.5 million on Ichiro and then .50 million (I assume) on a backup who will never play and never contribute(not necessarily for Ichiro since he does not need one, but you still have to have 24 players) . So that is a total of 5.00 million. When you could spend 4.00 (or less) on a better outfielder with a greater injury chance and .80 million on a decent backup. It is just two different philosophies.

All valid points. For the pro Ichiro card people I do have one question....where do you bat him in the lineup?

"I would rather pay less for a less sturdy player"

What's sturdier than a guy without an injury?

In regards to Pagan... He plays 1 position, has a worse arm than Ichiro and only plays CF. Plus he doesn't have the hit chances vs. LH's like Ichiro.

In regards to the pricing, IMO most guys in this set are grossly overpriced. The Sporting News had a problem with pricing in their 1st year, 2001. I think Strat suffers from the same affliction.

That being said, since most cards are overpriced, the point is mute. In Ichiro, you get a solid bottom of the order guy, that can cover your OF, give you great D, doesn't get hurt, and gives you 30 hit chances while doing so.

So back to the original question of Victorino vs. Suzuki? I'll take Ichiro.

And yes, there are a lot of ways to build a squad and evaluate players.

I wish one of our computer geeks in the community could put together a Diamond Dope site or at the least a spread sheet to track players, and how they performed in parks.

I have bought the PIG and I mean PIG Francouer many times as he has a -5 arm in RF. I will take the PIG and his many bad (PIG) at bats knowing that the other team won't run on me. Having the motorcycle in the outfield is just about as good. If you play in a hitters park he might just not work so well as who runs when Earl Weaver (RIP) is waiting on the 3 run homer.
I don't like Suzuki as he has lost power and average. I would take the PIG over him as I like the PIG even though lipstick really doesn't make him more handsome than Frank M on a good day.

Sorry, I thought the statement, "I would rather pay less for a less sturdy player" speaks for itself,..no? In other words, I don't want to pay for Ichiro Suzuki's durability. .. Good luck you guys.

I really don't care if a guy is bullet proof injury wise unless he has a lot better card than that of 2012 Ichiro Suzuki. I also don't care much about an outfielder's arm strength, it just does not come into play all that much. And when you buy/sign Ichiro to a contract for 4.5 million, you are paying him to play CF, because he is priced that way. So the question becomes (at least in my mind) how much would Ichiro be if he was not bullet proof, not one of the most popular players of all time, and not a Yankee? To me, it looks like a 2.00 million dollar card. His OBP and OPS are just plain low. And I like Ichiro as a player.
