Fun platoon

PostWed Jul 17, 2013 9:32 pm

In a franchise league playing the 1947-1966 Tigers, I had a fun platoon of Ray Boone and Wayne Belardi, 37 HR & 118 RBI with 9 games to go. Always wanted to use Belardi...............

Speaking of fun platoons, how about this one in League Park '34 at $120 mil:

$6.70 mil Juan Gonzalez .293 48 101
$3.88 mil Ted Kluszewski .259 17 41

Combined Gonzo & Klu .277 65 142

From the looks of things, Gonzo had more "fun" than Klu.

I use a platoon at DH on a lot of teams, but I've NEVER had my platoon DH against lefties (or righties for that matter) get 100 RBI except for Gonzo. I'd have to look, but I don't think I've ever had a platoon DH get 40 or more HRs either, except for Gonzo above. I spent a bit more on that platoon than Andy, but the cap was higher, too. Since Steven always asks for it, here's the link to that team:

Here's a cheap DH platoon in Wrigley '66 at $100 mil for one of my teams in 2012 Barnstormers:

$2.02 mil Art Shamsky .269 16 50
$.93 mil Lou Piniella .264 12 50

Combined .267 28 100

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/387203

Piniella and Shamsky again, this time in Sportsman's Park '20 at $120 mil, with about the same combined numbers, despite the higher cap:

$2.02 mil Art Shamsky .266 12 41
$.93 mil Lou Piniella .290 16 47

Combined .279 28 88

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/1025175

Here's Klu and Joe Charboneau in League Park '34 at $140 mil

$3.88 mil Ted Kluszewski .268 35 89
$2.12 mil Joe Charboneau .289 13 31

Combined .276 48 120

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/811604

Here's Klu and Joe Charboneau again in League Park '34 at $140 mil, with similar numbers

$3.88 mil Ted Kluszewski .275 27 71
$2.12 mil Joe Charboneau .261 15 36

Combined .269 42 107

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/385659

Here's Jeff Burroughs and Lou Piniella in Minute Maid at $100 mil

$2,93 mil Jeff Burroughs .279 36 83
$.93 mil Lou Piniella .304 12 42

Combined .288 48 125

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/362678

Here's Klu & Lou, my most frequently used DH platoon combo at $100 mil, in League Park '34

$3.88 mil Ted Kluszewski .333 16 69
$.93 mil Lou Piniella .289 14 51

Combined .312 30 120

Another player I've used with good results against lefties is $1.44 mil Mark Brouhard. I've also used used $3.22 mil Johnny Briggs against righties, but with mixed results. Klu gives more bang for the buck. I've also used Gates Brown at DH against righties once at $140 mil, with poor results, but I've seen him do well for other teams at all caps $140 mil and lower. I shy away from Brown, as many times HAL will let the platoon player bat his weak side when there is a change of pitchers, depending on the situation, and Gates has no chance whatsoever against lefties.

On smallball teams, I've had good results with $2.34 mil Phil Weintraub at DH against righties and have seen others use $3.17 mil Roy Thomas both ways at DH with good results. I've seen other managers platoon Weintraub and $.91 mil Jesus Alou at DH with good results. Some even use them as a LF platoon!

Some of the above numbers may be a little high for RBI and HR totals, as HAL will often use such players as injury replacements against both lefties and righties, which drives BA and OBP down.

Team is scuffling along, and I've used Boone before, but I always wanted an opportunity to use Belardi in at least a platoon capacity. And with the roster limits and such, I had decent injury replacements if Belardi went down

Platooned Belardi a few times way back in ATG2....can't remember with who.

Check out Thurman/Brouhard: 52 HR - 119RBI for a combined $2.13 mil.

Some totals of platoons are skewed at times because sometimes injuries force both players to play at the same time and both will usually have some pinch hit ABs so their AB's will be higher than a normal single player would have been. But still always interesting to see the numbers...and sometimes very surprising.

Let me suggest the Bill Skowran /Don Mincher platoon. And for small cap DH the ever succulant Jay Alou/ Lefty O'Doul entry.

@ 140 mil I platooned Leon Culberson 1.44mil with Larry Walker, in 213 ABs Leon gave me .310/.347/.409 with 4 HRs. I'll take that kind of BA/OBP from a guy at that salary at that cap all day.

Check out his MLB stats for that card and it shows you an EG when strat can in fact recreate a players season with impressive accuracy.
