Help Please: Team Strategy - Base running and stealing

PostMon Jul 22, 2013 1:16 am

This has always been a huge mystery to me. Is it percentage based? Meaning: If I set Base Running and Base Stealing to "Normal," that means runners will only attempt the extra base or steal IF the percentages are in his favor. If I set the setting to "Very Aggressive," that means almost no matter what the odds are, he's going to try to steal or take the extra base. Am I correct in my thinking?

I see some horrible arms in the outfield, and I've been adjusting my baserunning to "Very Aggressive" but I'm not sure I'm doing myself any favors. In fact, I may be hurting myself. Would the guys take the extra base anyway with the setting on "Normal"? Please do help me out on this. I've never understood it. Thank you in advance for your time and your input.

I just asked the same questions. Sorry, if I read your topic, I would not have repeated the question.

Yes they would attempt a lot of the advances anyway. Not as many as aggressive but, at a higher percentage of successful advances. Adjusting the baserunning and stealing levels based on the opponents outfield/battery actually is only changing your own risk tolerance level. I've had good success with many speed teams set to conservative on stealing. You still get a lot of SB's ... of course not as many as more aggressive settings...but the SB % is outstanding as you lose very few baserunners.

Thank you so much, Springer. That confirms that I'm actually hurting my team if I mess with the settings. Allow me to ask this: How about on an individual player and clicking him to "Steal More" when facing a catcher who sucks? Same thing as messing with the setting in the team strategy?

i don't notice any difference when I set my base stealing on aggressive+. on the steal more I notice more caught stealing. on very aggressive baserunning, hal will try to go 1st to home which greatly increases your outs. it would be nice if the box score stated players getting thrown out and by whom.
