Jim Edmonds

PostSat Jul 27, 2013 5:06 pm

I hear Jim Edmonds regularly bandied about as a disappointment on these forums. This is my first time to use him, and I'm using him in an unusual way by playing him at 1b and making him the defensive replacement for Hack Wilson on this Cubs Franchise League team, but he is having a very strong season.

Obviously, having the Cubs in a NonDH Franchise League creates the old "Do I want Hack in CF" debate. I wouldn't have thought of this if I wasn't in this situation. The best offensive CF that the Cubs could play is Hack/ the best offensive 1b they could play is Jim Edmonds...............

Yes, Edmunds is often maligned, but I've had good luck with him; I've often gotten him as a consolation prize in drafts when losing out on other players or got him on a franchise team. His good defense and versatility aren't bad and he is certainly better than his "street cred" in my humble opinion.

IMO it's his injury prone nature that scares people off. Most of us will deal with the chance of injury with a Bags, Gibson, Beckwith, Delahanty etc b/c they can provide some significant numbers most times, Edmonds card and DD numbers don't impress some of us enough to spend that money on him.

I agree that he might not be a bad consolation prize but I would feel compelled to a season long search to upgrade him.

I've had mixed results with Edmonds, but his D is very good and if he matches your park well, he does have pretty good power.

Question for you: Why is he playing for the Cubs? Do you get to have one player that isn't on the franchise you own?

He played for the Cubs, therefore he is available for them in this particular league's set of rules

I wondered why you used him at 1B. I also like him, but at CF, and what are the odds he would outperform Hack? Out of curiosity, who would you have selected at 1B if Edmonds was not available?
