Why not just do away with the mystery card concept and go back to knowing what you are dealing with?
I guess I've never understood how having even less control than in regular games can make things more enjoyable.
Just my thoughts, but also the reason that I'll have to hope that a 60s league with identifiable players will appear someday.

I tried it 2 or 3 times and every time failed miserably. it was not enjoyable. it's based on luck. Would love to see a 1969 online game

Many people enjoy the mystery game and some do not. It is not simply a lottery. There is skill and fun involved trying to figure out what cards you have that are worth the salary (or your park) and which are not. It is much more of a thinking man's game once the season begins than the other games with known cards where much of the strategy is gone after the preseason.

I admit to being unfamiliar with the process for discovering what cards you actually have.

I guess my question stems from the fact that it must take a certain amount of time to discover your actual players, and in the meantime, the league is in progress and you are operating somewhat blind in terms of strategy, lineups, etc. And then, if/when you discover which version of a player you have, you are still at the mercy of a stadium you had to select beforehand that may be totally unsuitable for your player set.

If the attraction is solving the mystery, that's fine, but the answer may do you no good in terms of playing the game.

Seems not unlike Strat Russian roulette.

It is much more like managing a real team in my opinion. You are trying to evaluate your players by looking at the ratio of walks, strikeouts, etc. You look to the "minors" (the free agent pool) for help when your guys "aren't performing" (you get a bad card for someone). You can actually change the success of your team by picking up a couple new players. If your in a home run park and end up getting a players card in which they hit well but don't hit homers, you have choices. You still need guys to get on base so you may want to keep him, there are still plenty of free agents to try who do have a chance of hitting homers, or you could trade him to a big park team for a player who has been hitting into long fly outs (a guy who can hit homers). You try to drop bad players ASAP but yet don't want to drop a great player who is simply in a slump. In summary, the strategy doesn't end with the start of the season.

I play both mystery card and single season. Mystery keeps my interest longer because you need to continue to evaluate your team and make changes through the season. Single season is all about building the team from the ratings disks as best you can and then tweaking manger settings and lineups.

Two completely different gaming experiences. I enjoy both.

some people get it and some don't even try. You can't convince people who already have their mind made up that they won't enjoy it.

I have probably played more 200x seasons than anyone who plays the mystery card game and I agree with your statement. In real life even the best players do not consistently have the best seasons. The mystery card game brings out this factor much more than say just some bad luck in the 200x game. However, unlike real life, in the mystery card game you can change on the fly and replace who you perceive as your underachieving players, on occasion changing lemons into lemonade. It extends your involvement in team building for at least half the season(hopefully you have a handle on it by game 81), which is generally acknowledged to be the most enjoyable part of the game. I do not really understand why more 200x players don't cross over to the mystery card game.

Well the good news is that SOM considered the game popular enough to warrant releasing another whole mystery game.
So there will be haters of the mystery game, but as long as we keep playing it, they don't matter.
I play nothing but the mystery game and wouldn't have it any other way.

Well I'm getting ready top start my first league with the change. I'm in the camp in being disapointed in the change as I felt it just added another thing to study when trying to succeed at the game. I think the leagues will be more balanced now with more owners having an equal chance. So that's good- but I imagine my credits spent to credits earned will take a bit of a hit.
