Garcia's Blog XXXIV- Continous Leagues

PostThu Aug 08, 2013 4:26 pm

Hi guys,

Hope everyone is enjoying the new Superstar Sixties mystery game! The response has been great so far with all the leagues that started this past Monday and already many more are scheduled to start next week. If you haven't played the '60s game yet but do play mystery games make sure to be aware of the new batting lineup rules as well. You can find them here.

Now while many leagues people play here are public leagues there is also a tight-knit community of gamers who play in continuous leagues, mostly with the ATG or 20xx sets. New users may not be aware of these so I wanted to spend today talking a little bit about them. The Individual League Chat forum is full of these types of leagues, some of them going on thirty+ different seasons of play!

To me this can be the best part about playing in an online league. Starting a league, creating a league history, and building a friendship and competing with the other users in your league can make the game much more interesting and enjoyable. Many of these have different types of rules as well, some only allow you to draft players from certain eras or teams, in others you can only draft lefty players, while others can only use players who had stats below a designated level.

Today I want to highlight one of these long-term continuous leagues, the SBDL. This league was started by the user Palanion and has been playing since ATG II back on The Sporting News. Now they are in the middle of their 29th season about to enter their 30th including many of the same managers from those beginning seasons! You can view their current season here: http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/league/346732.

They have one of the more interesting league set-ups where players are eligible depending on what letter their last name starts with. They draft new players every year although a limited number of players can be 'kept' each season while managers can also 'steal' players from other rosters. Although these users would know way more than I would regarding the particular rules, playing like this provides a new player set each season and allows all managers to become competitive every season.

One of the things I mentioned earlier was building league history. 11 of these 12 managers have been in the league since season 24. The newest manager just joined in season 28... and wound up winning that season's championship! Lucky enough for us a complete list of league champions can find in their ILC thread here.

These types of leagues are not for everyone but many might be interested to know of other leagues similar to this one. This league was brought to my attention as one of the members wrote in about it looking to learn about other long-term leagues. If you are in a league such as this, please let us know and we can highlight the league here! Even if you're not in one of these leagues reading about it the different rules and seeing league histories are fun! If you are looking to get into a league such as this make sure to check out the ILC forum to read up on these leagues and look for posts that are advertising for new members!

Again if you want to let us know about a league or have anything else for us please write in to onlinegamesupport@strat-o-matic.com. Next week I will be away, there will be no blog as I won't be able to post one... However I will be back the week after (August 22nd) and will have an update then. Enjoy these next two weeks and I will be back and talk to you all then!

-John
