I have 4's all the time in the outfield but avoid obviously at center. But have played Hack Wilson frequently there. 3rd and 1st have 4r's alot. Come to think of it everywhere. I have been playing Dan Ugly alot at second lately. I have had very good seasons with Topper Rigney at short although 4 phobia does especially apply at that position. Just about anyone who knows me thinks I am nuts for playing John Tomerago at catcher all the time or whats his name.

Great Topic Nev,

Although I've never tried him, I've seen others win with Stargell in left in $120 and $140 leagues, I'm sure platooning in $200 leagues also, like I said I've only used him once and the league isn't done, the team should make the playoffs, maybe, but who knows if it will win.

But I do use them in $60 - $70 - $80M leagues with regularity....here are some of my moderate successes:

Here's a $60M team with cheap Kiner in LF that won 90 http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/1106325

Here's a $80M team with Babe Herman that is currently in semis http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/sim/1106874

How about Earl Combs crappy arm in cf in a $80M that were CHAMPS http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/1104349

Like I said I'm anxious to see how my only Stargell $140 team will do, but it's mid season and no final assessment....

btw...I think a better question is this..........why do so many people use Hack in cf...I've used him 6 times in $140 leagues, the FOUR times I had him at DH all FOUR made the playoffs, the TWO times I played him in CF the teams won 85ish and missed the playoffs...I see tons of owners swear by him in cf, but I don't see them winning trophies...what is the CONSENSUS out there for Hack in a $120/$140 league, do you have more success with him at DH or in CF? I'm I wacko to think of him stricktly as a DH??

The modest success of the Babe Herman team was despite him playing rf. He hit .264 with under 100 rbi's which sucks, and he only cleanly fielded 12 out of 37 x rolls, which really sucks. Probably would have won 90 with a real rf''er.

Combs doesn't count as bad d. He still catches the ball and if you have good corner arms they should get lots of assists as other teams will often run more aggressively with Combs in center. Arms are overrated anyway, except in places like Petco or Griffith.

Nev, I'm not sure if you're considering using $5.38 mil Reggie Jackson or $3.79 mil Reggie Jackson in RF, but I've used the $5.38 mil Reggie Jackson in RF on 9 different teams (the $5.38 mil Jackson hits lefties and righties equally well compared to the the $3.79 mil Jackson). The links to those teams, and an additional team where I used $4.84 mil Willie Stargell in LF, are below:

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/324807 - 81-81, Reggie .299 .376 .573 44 130: Stargell .283 .360 .520 37 107; $80 mil cap 4s in left and right

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/816494 - 94-68, Lost in semis .282 .366 .585 49 124, $100 mil cap

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/822798 - 81-81, Reggie .281 .364 .608 54 111, $100 mil cap

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/359453 - 91-71, lost in semis, Reggie .279 .360 .609 58 139, $100 mil cap

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/369540 - 82-80, Reggie .302 .371 .585 45 96, $100 mil cap

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/375542 - 84-78, lost in quarter-finals, Reggie .247 .327 .521 43 88; Franchise theme 24 team league. post war and expansion Yankees, $100 mil cap

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/805001 - 93-69, lost in semis, Reggie .263 .372 .494 38 125, $100 mil cap

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/806118 - 96-66, lost in the Finals, Reggie .257 .333 .586 48 105, $100 mil cap

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/299624 - 99-63, lost in semis, Stargell .294 .355 .696 64 147, $100 mil cap

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/819945 - 90-72, .227 .288 .482 47 111 $110 mil cap, $60 max of which could be spent on hitting.

All of the above teams were $100 mil cap, except for one $80 mil cap team and one $110 mil cap team. All were played in parks that favored lefty power hitters, being either League Park '34, Penmar Park, Shea '71 or a version of Yankee Stadium.

6 of the 10 teams above made the playoffs and a 7th team won 90 games but missed the playoffs. Of the 6 playoff teams, 5 lost in the first round. One lost in the Finals. There were no rings. All of the above teams were .500 or better, with the average record being 89-73, a .550 winning percentage.

On the 7 $100 mil teams on which Jackson played RF for me, Jackson averaged .273 .356 .570 48 113. There is not another lefty hitting RFer in the $5-$5.50 mil price range that can come close to consistently averaging those numbers in a lefty power park, with the possible exception of Ben Oglivie, but he's a 3 in LF, so why would anyone play him in RF where he's a 4?

Jackson's poor defense is offset by his big offensive numbers and his great price at $5.38 mil, which allows his manager to spend more money at other positions. Contrary to what others may assert, the above teams made the playoffs in large part because of Jackson, not despite him. 5 of his 9 teams made the playoffs, a .556 playoff percentage, which is far above the norm of .333.

OK, I'll take the bait. With CF being such an important position defensively, I too consider Wilson mainly as DH material, although the rules would permit him to be used as a corner OFer under EXTREMELY limited circumstances. For a good discussion on the issue of Hack Wilson in LF?, see the following link to the old TSN forums, a time when the discussion boards were a bit more ....um .... lively, interesting, passionate, entertaining and not only more widely read, but seemed to have a much higher participation rate from the online Strato community

In the 20xx games I have, smaller pool you don't always get the choice, many times it's O or D, not and. It's been fine there, but with the bigger ATG pool, I haven't either.

love it adit. your team goes against all the rules about strong arm and a 1 in cf, 1's and 2's at ss and ss, bresnahan at catcher. just love it!

Yeah, I think the important thing to remember is that LF & RF have the same chance of occuring on the pitchers card - the difference is in throwing arm - RF is far more important throwing arm wise. You can play Babe Herman out there with a -2 arm or even Reggie with a -2 arm. Arm is king in CF & RF. Or from the standpoint of "all things being equal" arm is the determining factor. Really Nev, you asking for advice? No offense meant - I love you, man. 8-)

...and speaking of Babe Herman:

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/team/819861

This team had a great first half, but faded down the stretch. They also underperformed their expected W-L based on run ratio (should have been 88-74). This was a $90M team in a shuffle league -- Babe Herman played RF because the $5.37 Reggie was DH'ing. Babe raked - .349/ .429 / .657, with 103 extra base hits and 155 RBI's. His defense, however, was pretty brutal - only turned 24 of 66 X-chances into outs, and only 8 assists.

You have to cover SS, 2B, CF in that order - everything else is negotiable.
