POLL: 3 way tie rules

Moderator: Palmtana

What should be the rules regarding 3 way ties?

A. The team with the best head to head record wins the wildcard.

55%
B. The rules as they are, shouldn't change. The best record within division should win the wildcard.

POLL: 3 way tie rules

PostMon Aug 19, 2013 12:18 pm

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/league/346694

My team, RBI'd for her Pleasure just finished the season in a 3 way tie for the W/C.

http://onlinegames.strat-o-matic.com/le ... ead/346694

I'm tied with MASH 4077 who I was 7-5 against and Broken Arrow who I was 8-4 against.

I SAY BASED UPON MY RECORD AGAINST BOTH TEAMS MY TEAM SHOULD BE IN THE POST SEASON.

FROM THE RULES:
Tiebreakers for a 2-way tie are, in order:
- Head-to-head record
- Run differential
- Coin flip
Tiebreakers for a 3-way tie are, in order:
- Best record vs. teams within division
- Run differential
- Coin flip

Strat says they "follow" MLB rules in the event of ties. I say "follow" because MLB uses a 3 team 2 game elimination playoff. And we don't use that rule here.

I say head to head record should be the #1 thing if there are 3 way ties and NOT best record vs. teams within division.

I must say I agree with Visick on this. How difficult can it be to come up with a code in the event of a 3-way tie? Really shouldn't be that hard. Apparently it is much like the 600 PA code for 3 game injuries. ABs + BBs = PAs.
Why not ABs + BBs + HBP + Sac Flys + Sac hits = PAs.
It's like 1+1+1+1+1=5. But what do I know?

I don't disagree. I think part of the problem, however, is that outside of your own division you may not play a team the same number of times as somebody else. I believe everyone has two teams they only play 9 times. So, if you played the team 9 times and the other team played them 12 times, maybe that is not considered a "fair" tiebreaker?

While I know we are all entitled to our opinions, please understand this could apply to ALL of us.

So when you vote "Stay as is", put yourself in my shoes. I had the better record vs. these teams.

The way I'm reading it, if you had tied with just ONE of those teams, you'd be in; but since you tied with BOTH you're out. Makes no sense at all

Their really is no fair way for a tiebreaker to be applied for a 3 way wildcard tie, mostly because of the unbalanced schedule--I still think 2 six team divisions could solve a bunch of these issues, and making writing the code for tiebreakers easier and consistent.

But I would like to see a mini playoff, there are two open dates usable before the playoffs begin, even 3 way ties can be accommodated by playing the two worst run differential teams on day 1 and the winner getting the other team on day 2, with that winner getting the wildcard.

IMO... The ONLY fair way, since we I played 12 games against both teams, is to use the head to head record.
It makes no sense to use it for a 2 way tie, but not a 3 way tie.

I like this idea. With the rest days you could have play in games. These teams would have to use pitchers to get into the post season just like MLB.

I am with whatever Frank thinks as he is a very wise man.

Just curious but how can you decide a 3 way tie w/ head to head ? If during the season team A has a better record than team b, and team b has a better record than team c, and team c has a better record than team a, Who gets in ? ... I don't like the best division record because more likely than not the teams would be in different divisions, so to me that doesn't make sense. I think I would go w/ Run differential, but that's just my 2c.
