Time to add some new players and...

PostFri Aug 23, 2013 5:04 pm

Not sure what the "programmers" are doing but its about time to add some players to ATG. Seems like in the same players are always being drafted and about 60% never drafted. ATG needs some infusion of new talent!! Anyway, to get this started, here is my list of adds to the current database (please note this is Baltimore Oriole centric)...

1) CF, Brady Anderson, 1996
2) SS, Miguel Tejada, 2002, 2004, 2006
3) LF-RF-DH, Ken Singleton, 1979
4) 3B, Melvin Mora, 2004
5) C, Chris Hoiles, 1993
6) 2B, Davey Johnson, 1971, 1973
7) OF, Albert Belle, 1998
8) SP, Mike Boddicker, 1984
9) DH-OF-C, Larry Sheets, 1987
10) SP, Mike Mussina, 1992
11) RP, Mariano Rivera, 2005, 2008
12) CF, Mike Trout, 2012
13) SP, Justin Verlander, 2011, 2012
14) 3B, Miguel Cabrera, 2012, 2010
15) 2B, Robinson Cano, 2012
16) 3B, Chipper Jones, 2001, 2008
17) RF, Ichiro Suzuki, 2007, 2009
18) 1B, Paul Molitor, 1991, 1994
19) 1B, Paul Konerko, 2010
20) CF, Dale Murphy, 1083, 1987

How's this for getting this thing started. I encourage you to add you 'adds' to this thread. Mark

Since the ball has been started rolling, here are the lists that have been compiled over the last couple of years. They include suggestions made directly by a community member, indirect suggestions (the (fill in a team) need better shortstops -- SITH Significant Impact on Team History), members of the best teams over 22-year patches, my own idiosyncratic choices (BIP Bill's Idiosyncratic pick), and some better representative cards of existing players.

You will notice that some of the lines are color-coded. These are related to two polls that I did earlier this year to have people vote on who they would like to see in the game. We all have what we think are slam-dunk choices only to discover that the rest of the community may not see it so. Rather than submit the whole 3000 lines to SOM to have them choose, the idea was to have us submit the names/years of those players we would really love to see. The color coding is: red -- definitely yes, yellow -- yes, light blue -- why not, but not that warm, dark blue -- not really, purple -- no. I'll be starting up another poll soon. But keep submitting the names and years you would love to see and I'll get them on the master list.

Pitchers : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhbUd7KvVuIMdGhFOTUya3JQdEtBam83aThJcm44Wnc&authkey=CLXE3sME&authkey=CLXE3sME#gid=0

Teams : https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AhbUd7KvVuIMdDVaTXJBbEZFTFpBREt1T2xWelFPX1E&authkey=CJWWpZUG#gid=0 (lined out means that I have already added the players to the master list)

Any questions, I'd be happy to answer.

Before we add a bunch of current players

PostFri Aug 23, 2013 10:00 pm

Before we add a bunch of current players who can be played in the 20xx games, please get behind important cards that mean more to the HISTORY of baseball, which is what ATG is all about.

55 Al Kaline (batting title)
11 Sam Crawford (best Crawford card)
87 Andre Dawson (MVP and Cub card)
47 Bob Elliott (MVP)
75 Fred Lynn (MVP/ROY)
22 Rabbit Maranville
53 Al Rosen (MVP)
49 Vern Stephens (159 RBI shortstop)
44 or 48 Bobby Doerr
49 Ted Williams (Triple Crown)
51 Bobby Thomson (who picked all his cards, Ralph Branca? ?)
54 Hank Thompson (great NeL and Giant--not even represented)
10 Heinie Wagner
70 Carl Yastrzemski (good offensive card eligible in LF AND 1b)
50 Eddie Yost
63 Bobby Allison
55 Richie Ashburn
59 Jim Lemon (not even in set)

82 Joaquin Andujar (his 85 card is not very good)
Jose Mesa (closed for those good 1990s Indians teams)
a good representative Andy Pettite
81 Fernando Valenzuela (the Fernandomania season, though I would bet he woudnt be a *)
73 Tom Seaver (just hoping for a more dominant Seaver card, but I'm afraid like Feller and Palmer, for some reason Strat doesn't transfer how dominant they were)

Personally I would like to see additions in this manner:
--Quickly Add important cards that complement cards players already in the set (like a better Al Kaline, etc)
--Quickly Add important players that aren't there at all (I mentioned Hank Thompson, a great NeL player who also was a key contributor to 2 NY Giant World Series teams (51/54)
--THEN (as in after the few needed 1900-1990 additions), add a sprinkling of more recent cards, but in a more chronological order (for example, get the Al Kaline's and Hank Thompson's in soon, then make effort to add important cards of the 1990s that need to come in, then maybe 2000-2005, then 2006-20whatever)

I'm with Andy on just about all of his suggestions, but would add Ken Caminiti's 1998 MVP season to his more modern choices. Would also love to see a few more players from the 1900-1930 years to give the earlier franchise teams a more representative lineup. A decent offensive year from HOFer Rabbit Maranville, for example, or a better Goose Goslin, Sam Rice, Gavvy Cravath, Bobby Veach.
