Musial or Heilmann

Good evening everyone.

I have the first waiver pick and plan on dropping Coombs and Meusel and adding either Musial or Heilmann. Or drop Terry as well and take both with some other moves. Or concentrate on SP*?

It seems to me that you should go for Musial first, since Heilmann gets used a lot less often and you might get both that way. But you have no way to get either with the first pick unless you drop Meusel and pick up one of the cheap versions of Musial - the game won't let you drop Coombs to pick up a hitter since you only have 5 SP on your roster. So you can't afford Heilmann with the first pick unless you drop another hitter.

Generally, teams in Petco type parks focus on guys with a lot of hits on their cards and good clutch ratings, such as the higher-priced Meusel and Appling. Miguel Montero isn't really a good fit for the park, and neither will Musial be. Good cheap Petco catchers include Earl Battey, Manny Sanguillen, Frank Duncan, Les Moss, Frank Snyder, and Harry Danning. Controlling the running game in Petco isn't all that important, since guys don't get on base there as often as in other park types and your league has a lot of bomber type teams anyway. (I know, I'm one of them.)

I would try hard to go with good Meusel, McGee, and Cobb in the OF and Edgar, good Appling, LaJoie, and a better Terry in the IF, and concentrate on changing out Montero for a catcher better suited to your ballpark. If you're going to keep Murray, I would go with a lot of S7* SP's and use Murray as tied and late, setup and closer to close out games. If you do that you have to set closer use to "regular".

Thanks. I figured out the Coombs thing after I posted. Shame on me for not drafting a SP/RP. I haven't used Meusel since the early ATG games. Maybe I'll try again. Go with the expensive Terry since mainly RHP in my division?

I concur with rburgh. Nab Musial first because he will not be there in the second round. Heilmann just might depending on what the league perceives as their needs.

Oh, Musial fits the profile of Petco guys. It depends on how much you want to weaken your SP - that's a strategic decision you'll have to make. In a $100 million league, you need those guys who hit .375 in real life to have any sort of chance in Petco. His ballpark HR's are going to be mostly wasted, though. That's another strategic decision for you to make.

I've had a team win 97 games while hitting 49 HR's, another win 95 while hitting 55, and a third win 92 while hitting 34, so I'm comfortable with the idea of punting HR hitters entirely. Other people aren't. The best $100 MM Petco team I can recall had Pudge Rodriguez catching, an idea that would never have occurred to me. But it also had Wahoo Sam Thompson in RF pounding 37 triples and Joe Kelley in LF pounding 26, so it still hit more triples than homers.

My last team that just finished played in Washington '11 and had 57 HR. The team won 93 and lost in the finals. My last Forbes team hit 60 and won 87 and lost in the semi's. I always flip flop with thinking about having a HR guy.

Man I'm glad I opened this thread I didn't even know there was a guy named Meusel, I just thought the OP was misspelling Musial, or was stoned.

Actually, there was one more guy named Meusel than Musial who played in the majors - Bob's brother Irish was pretty good too.
