64. RickSmith - Mike Pagliarulo 1986
http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes ... 5130.shtmlUntil I went to a game at PacBell Park a few years ago, this game in 1989 had been the previous MLB that I had been in attendance at. It was one of the last games that Tommy John pitched in his career.
I was sitting in the outfield seats near the left field corner. The only run that Mike Witt supposedly gave up was a homerun to Mike Pagliarulo. However, it was clear to those of us sitting in the left field seats that Pagliarulo's ball passed on the wrong side of the foul pole, and should have been ruled a foul ball. However, there was no instant replay to reverse the call, and the call would have been reversed if IR had been used, it was that apparent. Those of us in the stands really gave the third base umpire, Tim Welke, a razzing through the remainder of the game.
Although it had no bearing on the final game's result, I thought it was too bad that Witt was denied his shutout because of an umpire's blown call.
