Saturday morning boxscore quiz

Some of you may have noticed this happen recently, so I have a feeling it will be answered very quickly, I found it interesting however so I figured i'd mention it here.

A closer comes into the game and starts the bottom of the 9th, his team winning by 1 run. He goes on to retire the side in order ending the game. Pitcher is not credited with the save. How does this happen?

Sounds like a description of the love life of certain SOM players.

Real reason was to help Jim Johnson in the save race. Absurd as many saves should not be awarded.

Great point. If the scorer can award wins outside the norm then they should apply it to saves as well. If a guy comes in with a 3 run lead and gives up 2 homers and loads the bases and gets out of it should that be a save?

Sure, for the guy that makes the diving stop on the scorched cookie the alleged closer served up, probably on a 3-1 pitch.
