Team Name Tributes

PostMon Sep 16, 2013 11:39 pm

Have a team in my league that started tonight named Vin Scullys.

A nice tribute to an important person in baseball history. Thought it might make a nice thread to hear from everyone on teams they have named to pay tribute to someone. By the way it was dougvantyle who paid this tribute.

My teams have usually been named after places I have lived or worked with the exception of a few team names that matched a theme team, for example I had Filene's Basement for a $60 M theme league.

Looks like I have two teams named to honor people:
1) Syd Smiles (Syd Barrett of the original Pink Floyd lineup)
2) Str8 from Joe's Garage (Frank Zappa)

Once named a team the Eugene Veedebs, not to pay tribute to the founder of the IWW and Socialist candidate for president, but simply because I couldn't think of anything better. Still wonder how many recognized the name.

Also named a team the London Jacks, definitely as a tribute, and have also gone through two 12-season leagues naming each of my teams after novels by Charles Dickens in one case, and Edgar Allan Poe in the other (the recently formed Poe's Prose is the final installment). And, yes, these were meant as tributes.

Named a series of teams after my youngest son, Johnny, who came along well after we thought our family complete with a son and daughter. First son very talented musically, but no interest in sports. Daughter had some passing interest in sports, maybe to pacify me?

But Johnny and I had a very early connection with sports, especially baseball. He knew stats I maybe had long forgotten, we played baseball board games, (though was not acquainted with Strat at the time), then onto video baseball, and my living vicariously through him through T-ball, little league and finally into his teen years.

I had an early interest, maybe obsession with baseball, but lost it over the years due to life, work, children's medical issues. Figure God, in his infinite wisdom, and sense of humor, felt giving us Johnny was something I needed as a spirit boost as the years went on, and I will be infinitely grateful for that and for Johnny.

Named a team in a bomber league in honor of Harry Caray - "Harry's Holy Cows". During his broadcasts every time a home run was hit, Harry would exclaim "There it is, it might be, it could be, it is.....a home run! Holy Cow!!!" Unfortunately, in this league, the herd was pretty thin.

Always music related, mostly guided by a recent live show, a new album, or one that I dug out and rediscovered.
Manager names fit the theme as well.

Asbury Park Accordians managed by Phantom Dan the week after Danny Federici died.
Tilamook County Peace Queers managed by AllRight Guy after a Todd Snider show.

Lots of Zappa and Zep references.

Most of my teams tend to pay homage to science fiction shows. Mostly Babylon 5 and star trek but a few others.
I used to come up with the name and then try to build an appropriate team. The Klingon Warriors had to be a bomber team.
Any team from Feringinar would of course be full of base stealers. A Vulcan team would attempt to attain balance and be "logically" constructed.

A few years ago, I had a team called the Raleigh Fingers.

Last year, I had a theme league team consisting of Mets and Expos, who were managed by Gary Carter, shortly after he passed away.
