1980's Drop/Add Strategy

PostSat Sep 21, 2013 5:11 pm

When a player has not been injured, what is a good number of AB for a hitter, and IP for a pitcher, to use for deciding to drop them?

I've read in forum posts that roughly 100 AB and 50 IP is the minimum # to use when trying attempting to identify the year based on stats. However, I'm seeing teams drop/add much sooner than that. Even the teams with winning records do what seems (to me) to be a high number of drop/adds, although not as many as teams with losing records.

I added up the drop/adds for the current league I'm in.

TEAM DROP # RECORD Current Total Value $
BBU 13 24-12 $77.991
CHI 6 18-18 $79.259
BEA 17 17-19 $77.831
HUM 14 14-22 $78.263

HUN 9 21-15 $78.201
ATE 18 20-16 $77.481
CYF 19 20-16 $77.545
JAC 18 15-21 $76.835

PAR 4 18-18 $79.166

THA 5 17-19 $79.313
CHE 17 17-19 $76.750
SVA 26 15-21 $75.261

The above #'s have me wondering if I should be quicker to drop/add? (My team is in red) Maybe prior to the 42 game mark (when drop/adds move from 5% to 10%) it makes sense to cycle through players who are performing poorly even when they have had few AB or IP in the hope of hitting on a player who immediately performs and is likely in a good year?

What strategy do others use for drop/adding?

Based on the above numbers it does not appear that teams wait for 50 IP or 100 AB prior to drop players. Few of the players dropped were injured. Without actually adding up all the numbers, I'd estimate based on quick review that pitchers tend to be dropped after less than 20 IP and betters after less than 50 AB.

Whatever the number of AB or IP you like to use it would be the same for all mystery card games and not special for the 80s.

I only wait as long as 100 AB for stud hitters. I give them a little extra chance to show me what they have. Lower priced hitters I'm not as patient with.

This makes sense. Thank you LMBombers.
