208. RickSmith - Mitch Williams 1986

Wild thing, you make my heart sing...

204. rjnewman - Ken Dayley 1987

In Game 6 of the 1987 NL Divisional Playoffs, Whitey Herzog performed a lineup change that I had never seen before (or since) in a baseball game.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes ... 0130.shtml

Todd Worrell had been pitching in relief, but a left handed batter, Harry Spilman, was due to bat, and Herzog wanted to bring in Ken Dayley to face Spilman. But in order to keep the option of having Worrell pitch again, Herzog moved Worrell to right field. As it turned out, Chris Speier ended up pinch hitting for Spilman (and struck out), and even though Worrell could have conceivably returned to the mound, Herzog allowed Dayley to remain on the mound, where he got Jose Uribe to ground out for the final out of the game. I still vividly remember that game and the picture of Worrell standing out in right field.

How do you know for sure? One was less apt to come out of the closet in the mid-80s.

OH.....you mean five "consecutive" guys from 1986!!!! I see now!

I remember that! Was that against Craig's "hum-baby" Giants - featuring Jeffrey Leonard's one-flap down home run trot?

Never heard anymore about it, but did Mo Rivera get to play center field over the weekend

Davey Johnson used to make same move with Roger Mcdowell..put him in right field after bringing in another reliever than replace reliever with Mcdowell returning to the mound.

Greg Harris of the Red Sox supposedly could pitch with either hand but was not allowed to do so in a real game. How would you even do that? Maybe warm up prior to the inning with both arms and keep a spare glove behind the mound? :D

I just looked up Roger McDowell on Baseball Reference.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/playe ... ro01.shtml

Apparently not only did Davey Johnson do it with McDowell, but good old Tommy Lasorda did the same thing with RM with the Dodgers during the 1991 season. Altogether, McDowell played 2 2/3 innings in the outfield during his career, without any fielding chances [would SOM make him a 6 rated outfielder?].
